In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

apercu \A`per`[,c]u\ ([.a]`p[^a]r`s[.u]), noun:
apercus; noun, pl.

1. A discerning perception; an insight:
2. A short outline or summary; a synopsis.
3. A first view or glance, or the perception or estimation so obtained; an immediate apprehension or insight, appreciative rather than analytic.
4. Hence, a brief or detached view; conspectus; sketch.

"Her schmoozy but magisterial aperçus inspired widespread emulation among the young" (Roy Blount, Jr.)

The main object being to develop the several aper[,c]us or insights which furnish the method of such psychology. --W. T. Harris.

A series of partial and more or less disparate aper[,c]us or outlooks; each for itself a center of experience. --James Ward.

Etymology: [French, from past participle of apercevoir, to perceive : a-, to (from Latin ad-. See ad-) + percevoir, to perceive (from Old French perceivre. See perceive).]

Thanks, I'm having a great holiday. When my dad died in 1994, they presented me with a huge flag, properly folded, which had been draped on his casket. He was a WWII Navy vet. This year, for the first time, I unfolded the flag and have it draped on the front of my house. It is making my dad smile, I'm sure. Me, too!

I'm sorry for your loss. No matter how long ago it was, it still hurts to lose a parent. I'm sure he was as proud of you as you are of him.

Thanks Ms. Rika! I have missed you a lot. I am sitting here quietly between cases. One of our surgeons got sick yesterdaym, and decided to schedule all his cases for today -- nice guy, eh? Anyway, I am having a nice day, and it is brightened by your good wishes.

Hey Arrghhhhh! Whassup?

Ren and Stimpy gay? Hardly apercu. What don't we expect out of a dog & cat living together and feasting on kitty litter?

Having to work today is a bummer. Wish you were off like the rest of us. Have a great Independence Day anyway.
