I bet you're right. That there were no doubt, lots of memos, studies, tests, debates, and discussions going on at NASA, about the launch event, and its possible consequences on re-entry safety.
Now we get Barnicle romantically speculating about "A Doomed From The Start Shuttle". jeez!
This is blasphemous stuff, insinuating that NASA knew during the mission, that the crew was "doomed", and they did nothing to alert the public. (This has already been a 1969 movie, "Marooned". )

insinuating that NASA knew You know I had a thought in my mind this morning of Hitlary standing up in the well of the Senate waving a newspaper with the headline "Bush Knew".
Or maybe it was just a nightmare.

80 seconds into the take-off, the foam hit the left wing of the shuttle. This is not uncommon. There was some concern at that time, so NASA commissioned an engineering group to study the ramifications. They returned a memo 2 days before re-entry, that there was a strip of damaged tiles on the left wing, the loss of the sensors, at that time, and trouble inside the left landing wheel,
The damaged area of tiles was 2 1/2 feet long, 7 1/2 inches wide.
There was absolutely nothing the crew could do to repair the damage, there was nothing they could do but cross their fingers that the shuttle would hold together on re-entry.
(I did my best to get quotes of what Barbree said on his re-appearance, clarifying his earlier remarks.)

The MSNBC anchor is screwing up what Barbree said as he interviews someone else.
THERE WAS NO ABILITY TO SPACE-WALK AND REPAIR THE WING!!!
REPEAT.....NO ABILITY TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE!!!!!!

James Oberg, a reporter being interviewed by the MSNBC anchor doesn't even realize the MSNBC anchor is misinterpreting what Barbree said. This is a prime example of how we get misinformation.
Thank goodness female anchor Chris Jansing is asking the most important question of a former astronaut. Is there anything that could have been done during the mission to fix the problem, that wasn't done. The NASA guy, to his discredit, does not answer directly, except to say, "rest assured, NASA would have done anything possible to secure the safety of the crew."

Former astronaut Tom Henricks says as a shuttle commander, he would have wanted to know about possible danger on re-entry, and he assumes NASA informed this crew about the damage to the tiles on take-off.
The MSNBC anchor is almost hyper-ventilating trying to turn this into a NASA conspiracy. Thank God!!! NBC flight expert, Robert Hager, reminds the hyperventilating anchor that this memo from the group of engineers who were studying take-off, does not say the damage WAS 2 1/2 X 7 in size. The memo says the damage "COULD POSSIBLY be that large.

I was reading your thread on it. Like I have said on another thread this morning, because, reading it on Free Republic is the next best thing to being there. And I wasn't able to view it from this far south. What a shock.
Good job btw.

Thanks for the reports. Speculation seems to be rampant today. Hopefully calmer heads will prevail in the end.

As sad a day as it was, it could only be made sadder by the kind of speculation that seems determined to second guess and blame the NASA engineers, way before any evidence is conclusive. That could only stiffle and deter future projects and support, and that would be a tragic result of this terrible accident.
