The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

What I want to know is why did Gimli need the permission of the "Lords of the West"?

Sailing to the Immortal West was not intended for mortal creatures like men, hobbits, and dwarves. It had to take something extraordinary, like carrying the Ring, to do it. The friendship between Gimli and Legolas must have been on a similar scale.

I can empathize with folks here about "online friendships". I've had some online friends for over ten years, and these are genuine friendships. I think one gets a good idea of the person behind the phosphors (or whatever the metaphor for a LCD is) after reading enough of their posts. One gains experience in this, and it becomes easier with time. Don't forget, people had "penpals" long before there were "online pals".

Once can get an idea of they type of person even after only reading a few lines. I visited DU once, and I left after five minutes, never to return again. Everything posted there seemed so dirty and leering, and full of hate and envy.

So the Hobbit Hole is quite comfy and "homely", in the Tolkienesque of the word.

I would like to apologize for throwing such a depressing cold wet blanket into the Hole earlier today.

Hey, if you can't talk to your friends, who CAN you talk to! I'm glad you mentioned it. Several folks have had similar difficulties, and it's always good to know you're not alone!

We're cheering for you, Scott.... I'd invite you to move to PA but we just got a stinking Democrat governor and I think we're in for a long four years...

Okay...one more reply and it's off to bed before I forget what it is I want to say.

Sailing to the Immortal West was not intended for mortal creatures like men, hobbits, and dwarves.

It seems to me that Gimli didn't need the approval of the "Lords of the West" since he already had permission from the Eldar.

I am greatly relieved (and man, does Bailey's sound good right now). I am also spending all night typing this story up for my attorney tomorrow.

It ought to make for interesting negotiations.

Wow Scott.

Sorry. I don't know what to say.

I am going to be looking for something that brings me joy too soon, I think, I just of course hope it is at a time of my choosing.

I am glad you are thinking of it as an opportunity to do something different. I am sure you wish you could have timed the opportunity for your convenience instead of theirs. I sure hope you find something that brings you joy. And I bet it ain't gonna be the meeting with the attorney tomorrow! ;~D

An opportunity, I think.

Way to be, Scott! You'll do fine in a new job; best of luck in the hunt. Moving away, if you've been some place for a while may seem daunting, but WE'RE not going anywhere, so no matter where you go, here we'll be!

Scott,

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Probably the last thing you need is advice. But let me just share how things worked out for me in a similar situation.

I used to work for a conservative policy group in D.C. I have the distinction of being fired from the same job twice. The first time, there was a coup against the Executive Director. She was fired for financial mismanagement (although later info revealed it wasn't completely her fault). I had just turned 30. By the end of our Annual Meeting (of which I was in charge), I was put in charge of 2/3 of the organization and was in over my head (the group is national in scope). Eventually, along with everyone else in any type of management position, I was fired.

I was stupid enough to go back three months later when they hired the new E.D. Actually I had to. I had no other offers and the Mrs. was pregnant. I stayed there another five years. In December of 1990 I was diagnosed with cancer, went thru the treatment and am fine. During that time members of the Board came to me and asked for inside information. I shared an office with the accountant. I knew there were two sets of books. Against my better judgement (I think if I'd been well I would've said no) I gave it to them. It backfired and the E.D. found out about all of it. But I had protection on the Board. That protection left at the end of the summer in 1993.

The day I filed my Friday weekly report and told the E.D. I'd had my last follow up Cat-Scan, he fired me.

BUT, two weeks later George Allen was elected Governor of Virginia. When he went into office, I was offered a job with his Cabinet staff. In the meantime I got to volunteer for Jack Kemp and attend the Super Bowl in Atlanta.

It lead to our moving to Richmond and being able to buy a house that would've cost us five times as much in D.C.

And, the icing on the cake: A year later the Board went to THAT E.D. and said "you can resign or go to jail."

Don't know if that helps. But just wanted to let you know you've got my axe.

Meeting with the attorney may give me joy tomorrow (he'll be MY attorney, for a change). But tonight, writing all the history of this long, complex and sordid affair (while taking calls from family) is not so much fun.

Heh.... I think it is a delicate time to be using that figure of speech. He already got one axe today that didn't help him much!

I hope this works out as well for me, but unlike the advice I offered to Rosie Cotton some time ago, I'm looking for something with a little less stress involved (which probably means not so much money).

Thank you Suzi. I don't mind moving away from Olympia. I just need to negotiate well enough so I can.

Well, my first thought was to post "I've got your back," which obviously, I didn't. ;-)
