The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!
Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I have to go paint the front door before business guests arrive for breakfast tomorrow, but wanted to check in briefly.
Was just great meeting a couple of us at the minimoot. Got to see the movie today with, and have lunch with, the (truly) very beautiful Ruthy and her attractive husband, Glen, and our famous hobbit hole resident ksen, with his lovely wife and precious daughter.
I am just really glad this whole hobbit hole thread has happened, it has been, and is, so nice.
Check back later, after the door is painted (I think).

Hi Sam!
You should have said something. Glen's a painter by trade and a front door is no big deal! *wink*
I called ksen about a half hour ago and they were still on the road. They ran into some rain while driving through the construction phase of the highway. :(
They should be arriving home any moment now and hopefully he'll check in for a bit.
BTW, Good luck with the breakfast / business guests!

In addition to the Tolkien books, she devoured all the Harry Potter books, and I've pre-ordered #5. Our youngest son has decided he likes the Harry Potter books; I'm thrilled because he has found SOMETHING he likes to read and will do it without my badgering him.
Clare also likes the Philip Pullman trilogy His Dark Materials. It has a more negative world view in my opinion ( she sayss "indeed"), but we've discussed them and I don't mind her reading them. She won't go looking for SF, but if she reads it and likes it, so be it. She like the fantasy genre better at this point.

Pullman is one of the few fantasy series I have hated. I think he was dishonest, in the first two books in the Dark Materials trilogy, in not really showing his views, and then the final book was such a horrible attack on Christianity and the church and even God. It was almost laughable how virulent that man is about faith and God...
I like Harry Potter much better.

(anybody else a map-aholic? :-) I am, absolutely. I just got a 1915 USCGS topo map of the area one set of grandparents settled in 1914. Now to get a modern map of the same section, and see how much has changed over the years.
My love of maps made map-reading and navigation a snap for me in the Army. There are just so many things that can be mined from a good map. Of course, good maps need good compasses. Now if I could just get around to fixing the latch on the Brunton engineer's compass I picked up cheap...

Well, it was in pretty bad shape, the dogs had scratched it up alot, it needed Bondo before it could be painted.
I am a pretty OK painter, was in the sign business for many years.
Anyway, I think it is done now.
That's not the worst of it, though, all 5 dogs just got a bath. They are not pleased.

It's not round, but Jeanne would have me paint it red, if she could talk me into it.
To: Sam Cree
Gonna make us a sign for Entmoot 04?
To: Sam Cree
Today was my dog bath day too!
We couldn't paint something outdoors this time of year here... When the company came knockin' tomorrow, they would get wet paint on their knuckles!

Rose and I are watching the first movie, listening to the director's commentary... first time we've done so. It's very interesting!
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
It is very interesting! - How far into it are you? - I just started the movie myself.
