Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

No, I don't collect anything, I was just thinking of the types of items folk are often trying to get rid of at garage sales!
I could use a chest of drawers though. Can always use another one of those!

Hello again, IOTN! Do you have a preferred nickname that I have somehow missed? "Time" or something? lol..my Hobbit name is Seamus Hamfist, so some people on this board refer to me as Seamus.
My proper name is Joe, so that's another option for you.
Additionally, my preferred nickname is JR...so, it's really up to you! :-)

stupid coding! why did that all come out italicized?
*affixes "dunce" cap*
To: ItsOurTimeNow
Am I up to speed? lol I think so! - You are a quick study!
To: ItsOurTimeNow
why did that all come out italicized? You are lookin' a little off balance, have you been in Corin's Scotch?

It's very rare to find "real" glassware at yard sales anymore. People got too wise. Occasionally you can catch something at an estate sale.
We'll sell what we can, then give the rest to our church for the spring yard sale. They usually raise over $10-15K and it all goes for missions work.
I bought truck there once! It was an 83 Ford Ranger. I paid $1,000 for it and drove it until the engine blew up (I got about 3 years out of it)

HAHAHA - ok, this is from a quilt that my Grandmother made for my daughter:
"I see the Moot, the Moot sees Me. God bless the Moot, God bless Me."
teeheehee...this is fun!

You are lookin' a little off balance, have you been in Corin's Scotch?I used to enjoy a little Bailey's in my morning coffee.
Then it got to be too much of a hassle to make the coffe.
Now I just enjoy the Bailey's.

Man, these screen names are hard to deal with! Maybe that's what we should use the tag lines for.

$1000 is a good price for a three year truck from a Garage sale!
I gave folk some great bargains at our garage sales a few years ago. We had three estates in two years, and had a lot of really nice stuff that we just couldn't use any more of.
Grandmother was into those Hummels, some of which were worth a lot of money. Early but helpful hawks at the sale told us we really had them underpriced. We said that we knew that. We didn't want to research every collectable and find out the maximum dollars we could get for each little thing, we wanted those lttle things to go to people who would love them and appreciate their worth and the great find they found.
It was fun. Wimmin would say, but this one is worth a hundred dollars! (or more- it was astounding) and I would grin and say, wow, what a good deal for you then! They just didn't *get* me. I was getting a lot of joy out of seeing them snap them up! - I didn't want them to feel guilty, we just wanted the stuff to go where it was appreciated.
To: HairOfTheDog
Yes, it was a bargain. Sadly I lost it in September, then my 86 Celebrity that December. Then when I took Jr. to the Inaugural the tranmission went out on our "good" car. So instead of replacing my truck, we bought a mini-van and later repaired the transmission.
I really need a truck.
We're looking at all the crap my mother-in-law has. Not a lot of valuable stuff. But we may to an estate sale just to clean out the house, then give the rest to the Salvation Army.
She has no earthly idea how much crap she's going to have to get rid of.
To: Corin Stormhands
It has taken a lot of years to accumulate all that crap!
Have a big sale! - I think sales are fun. even the .25 cent stuff. Great opportunity to watch people, picking items up, thinking about them, weighing the decision, and then handing you .50 cents.

Moot the World
To: HairOfTheDog
That's what we plan to do. They really didn't have a lot. Both retired because of their disabilities and their medical costs ate through all of their savings.
My mother-in-law grew up during the depression on a farm. In that mindset you didn't throw anything out. She's never met a margerine container she could part with.
My wife is the executor. She has already warned her siblings that she will be hard-nosed about this. There are a few things my m-i-l will give to family members (or anyone she chooses). Beyond that, if there's something they want, they'll have to pay for it.
And, quite frankly, because we know we'll never see a dime from them to help take care or her, we could care less if they get pissed off.

My wife is the executor. She has already warned her siblings that she will be hard-nosed about this. Heh. My siblings just said "yeah...whatever."
To: Overtaxed
Heh... my grandmother has so much junk in her apartment, it's amazing. And of course she wants all the nice stuff (silver, china dishes, longaberger baskets) to go to my uncle, not my mother who's been there for her all the time...
Families are odd, aren't they?
