The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

He got married like 4 times, steadily, was never happy, I think, though, always regretted deeply having stupidly left his first wife. So, I believe, Hemingway was always lonely, in spite of his women.

I am satisfied to take your advice on the Freakfest.

Hudson was modeled by the author on himself.

I like the cat descriptions, and find them eloquent :-)

Just saw Terminator. It was amazingly better than I had expected. The ending - well, the action was cool, and the movie fixed what I saw as a major flaw with T2. Not gonna say more. Worth seeing, though.

I do recall an article in Military History (years ago) about sword fighting with and without shields, the forensic and archival evidence indicated that legs were a real popular target with low swing and low cut moves.

"Conquest" with Robert Woodward on the History Channel has done a couple of eps about various kinds of sword fighting. A feint, and then a slash to the leg, was a favorite tactic. Except in formal duelling, where it was frowned upon.

What was especially interesting was contrasting Hollywood duels, using foils, against real-life duelling using a rapier. Sword-fighting is like knife-fighting, a nasty business. That's why I have adopted the policy of always bringing a gun to a knife fight.

Terminator 2 had plenty of humor, along with excitement and opportunity to identify with the characters, IMO. So, is the same true of this one, Jen?

Although, I am likely to see it based solely on your advice, without further description.

Let's see. There were things that struck me as really quite funny. Mostly situational humor. Id'ing with the characters, I dunno. There weren't many, of course, just John Connor and the girl and the terminators.

Oh, what was missing, IMO, was any sense of fear because of the evil Terminator. She just wasn't scary. Had this psycho-lesbian-Nazi-barbie thing going, but not scary.

Also there were some really gorgeous cgi shots at the end, you'll know which I'm talking about when you get there. This was a very Calvinist movie, though, Corin should avoid it.

I'm home. The boys enjoyed their time out with Grandma and Papa Joe. Steve took me to Chik Fil A and I found out that if you order a child's menu, you get a free audiocassette story about some great American. Unfortunately, we already had ordered, so I vowed to bring the boys back to get one the next day. I was pretty downcast about it, though...the boys love to listen to audiocassette stories while drifting off to sleep at night and it would have been a nice surprise for them.

We sat down at the table and opened the sack and there was an audiocassette! The lady that waited on us kindly slipped one in with our grown-up meals! So tonight the boys listened to a story about Alexander Graham Bell!

I'm so grateful.

This wasn't all naked...but there were plenty of people who needed to learn the benefits of sartorial splendour. Needed to learn it badly...even though they think they didn't.

We also swung by a Baskin-Robbins...not the new one...an old one that I had a bad experience with one time before (crunchy crystals in my ice cream...refrozen you know).

I had the most intense conversation with the ice cream guy. I'm not kidding. This is how it went.

Him-"Can I help you?"
Me-"Do you have Jamoca Almond Fudge?"
Him-"One scoop?"
Me-"Two."
Him-"Anything else?"
Me-"On a sugar cone."
Him-"I will not forget you. When you come again, I'll know you and what you ordered."

I swear it was just like that...verbatim. This guy was hunkered down over the ice cream and staring into my eyes and talking to me like this was the most important thing in the world. And I responded just the same.

When he said that about not forgetting me, I believed him.

Steve gave him a dollar tip.

Chik Fil A is a good company (which you probably know). They still don't open on Sunday because of their religious beliefs.

We have a grocery store chain here that does that. They don't open on Sunday and don't sell alcohol. Their prices are the highest around, but they have 30-40% of the market share in the Richmond area.

Huh. Nice to see someone care about his job, even if it's dishing ice cream.

All right, guys, I'm off until late Sunday. Everyone have a nice 4th! And keep the fireworks out of the Hole, we're too dry and liable to go up in flames.

My brain is fried, but what's that Martin Luther King quote? If you're a streetsweeper, be the best streetsweeper...etc...something like that...

That's cute about the audio cassette.

The ice cream guy may have been an alien ;-)

And keep the fireworks out of the Hole, we're too dry and liable to go up in flames.

With all the pints that have been flowin' since this afternoon, I doubt that'll be a problem.

But...advice well taken. Have a good trip.
