The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I'm usually going from one place to another and you have to turn it up to hear the radio over the hoods. I have it on at the desk but I'm not always there to listen. :)

When I was about fourteen I discovered that if I turned on Rush while doing my school, I got twice the learning in half the time. Possibly that is why I am politically interested these days.

But these days, a lot of what Rush talks about has been talked about at FR for at least a week.

Yeah, but Rush is less tinfoilhatty. And there aren't typos.

Besides, his arguments help me figure out what I really think, whether or not I agree with what he has to say.

Well that's no fun!

Um... well, the "series" and moose jokes get old after a while. Otherwise FR is about perfect.

However, I can listen to Rush at work, but I can't freep. There's the real difference!

Heh...what about the chees?

Seriesly, if something breaks, I have to know whether to get in the shower or not.

What would we do without FR, then?

Yawn... getting tired here. I need to catch up on my sleep eventually... slept on the couch last night and between the cats, the huge storm, and trying to roll off, I had a miserable night. Plus tonight is the last good night's sleep I'll get for at least three days.

Mtngrl@vrwc posted this over on the spoilers thread, but thought some of you who aren't on the spoilers list might be interested in joining too.

I am a member of a small group of people who are discussing The Return of the King on another board due to the fact that opening night is quickly approaching, and am wondering if any of you FReepers who are also LOTR fans might be interested in joining us there. We just started the book a couple of weeks ago and are only on Chapter Three (The Muster of Rohan) right now. Discussion can include previous chapters as well as the one we are currently talking about. We are covering approximately one chapter a week and welcome any and all participation. If you are interested in checking us out, Click here! Registration is easy. I hope to see some of you there!

Thanks for the ping...I'll try to drop over there. Been really really busy the last couple of days -- I am submitting a proposal for a contract with Courts in this state. Rewriting the Family Law Handbook, of all things. I've got a pretty good shot (the contract's officer there is a friend of mine and has done as much greasing as possible). Be a nice income boost next month if I get the contract (it's only about three week's work, but nicely paying three week's work).

Anyway, I'm delving deeper and deeper into the realms of self-employment here. But my proposal goes in the mail tomorrow. So I've been a little lax on my keeping up with threads n' things.

"Constance Vigilant" would be a great name for a character.

Hullo all!

Just checking in. As soon as Luke is in bed wife, s-i-l and I are going to watch O Brother Where Art Thou. I thought I'd like to see it on something more than my computer screen.

Busy evening trying to get ready to go tomorrow. Came home, had a quick dinner. Wife and boys went to youth group and a meeting for VBS (wife does the drama part). I replaced the front porch light (the whole light, not just the bulb), went to the library to get some books-on tape (picked up the first two Zelazny Amber books), went to Kinkos to drop something off to be printed for the pool (have I mentioned that this is my last season on the Board) and went to work out.

Here now clearing up posts/emails.

Understood! My own employment is in a state of flux that might last a few months or forever, and I have sent out some resumes too, not for big employment yet, but for something that will get me by if things get skinny round here.

I am nervous a little, and I am in hoarding mode... just ordered two tons of hay to be delivered on Friday for starters... if you get my drift!

Whoo-hoo! Amber! Have you read them before? Price Corwin is one of the coolest characters in all of fantasy.

if you get my drift!

Yes...that was me last winter. It's a good thing to do if there are storm clouds coming.

I've had a lot more luck with getting small-scale contracts than with actual jobs. Budgets are tight everywhere, and people are more willing to spend to hire someone to do a specific project or task (pay is even better), than committing to an employee for the long-term. I dunno...maybe I'm stumbling (and bumbling) onto something here.

picked up the first two Zelazny Amber books

If they're the right version, then they were read by the author himself, who was well-known for doing readings of his works at SF conventions. Hope you enjoy them!

Sounds like you might be 'backing into' consulting as a full time job!

Consulting is something SSQ has considered in the past; might look into it for the future!
