The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hee Hee, I actually meant "Bless his heart" in the nasty Southern gal way, about the troll you had to endure. As in, "It sure will be nice when he learns to be less annoying, Bless his heart." ;o)

That's cool about your hearing from Royd Tolkien! Did you tell him about our little site here? Well, maybe that's not such a good idea, at least until we get to the point where TTT comes out on DVD. At this point we're just chatting amongst ourselves about any old thing, but then we'll have some more good discussions about the books and movies!

Even better. I was honored that Corin gave me that much credit for my hurting bitten tongue.

I know I made them proud

Sometimes parents just have a hard time showing how proud they are. When the older boys were in high school, I wasn't very huggy, kissy with them, and I'm sorry now that I wasn't. It took a couple of years after they'd been in college to get back into the habit of hugging and kissing when they came home, then went back to school.

We're not making that mistake with Clare and Joseph. They get kissed at bedtime every night after prayers, and when I feel like hugging them, I do! SSQ is less comfortable with it because that's not how his family was when he was growing up. But we've all become more expressive as we've gotten older.

I loved that movie too! I just didn't expect to! That was a real treat but the whole time we watched it we kept saying, "oh, this is Jill. This is totally Jill." She will love it too. She hasn't seen it yet. They are limited on rentals on base. But, I expect I will get a little note saying something along the lines of, "see mom, this is how it's supposed to be!"

I'm not very demonstrative myself, but sometimes I feel so distant from my parents. It's kind of odd.

Here too. I have never let Myranda go without her hugs and kisses, even when she started pushing away thinking she was too old. But, When Jill pushed away, I let her. She ran away at 16. But, I really knew things had mended somewhat when a couple of years later she came in with a load of problems and let me sit her in my lap.

Jen, I think that's normal. We all kind of push away from parents. er, aren't demonstrative. It sort of gets more normal feeling later. Actually, after you move AWAY from home. Then, it's nice to see them for visits and it feels more normal to hug and stuff.

Yes my name is really Becky. My husband thought up the screen name when we got our WebTV. I did not start freeping for 2 yrs after that. Then he got a real computer, he uses that and I still use the Web. It will only handle one e-mail so we had to share the name. At first we just posted under the screen name without people knowing there was two of us. I usually posted early in the morning, he did late at night. One morning I had someone fuss at me for something he said:), so I started signing my name, I have no imagination to think up something clever. He signs his Mack, which is not his name. He does not want to get an e-mail on his computer because he dosenot want to get all the junk e-mails people send.. So we still share the screen name.

Did you ever get any rain.

Becky

It's not pushing them away, really. I just... don't like touching people. And I'm not good at expressing my feelings.

I value my parents - particularly my dad's - approval more than anyone's but my own. But I find it hard to just talk to them. Fortunately with my sibs around nobody really notices I don't spend that much time talking about my feelings or problems.

Nope. No rain yet. It came from north west of us though and we were under a T-storm warning. Then it slipped right south. So, it passed Wichita county completely. *sigh* I need to go turn the water back on some of the stuff I planted this morning.

They're probably picking that up from you, then, and sort of respecting your space. Try one time just putting your arm around their shoulders as you're talking to them, telling them about something you've been doing, or when you come in from being out.

It could also be because you haven't yet 'left home'. Something about your being gone, they and you will probably get more expressive when you meet up again.

HELLO EVERYBODY! I am home!

MBY: RE: Led Zeppelin/Tolkien.... -- Here is a cool site that deciphers at least one guy's analysis of Tolkien meaning, or lack thereof in Misty Mountain Hop, Over the Hills and Far Away, The Battle of Evermore, Ramble On..... Battle of Evermore is my favorite.

Zeppelin and Tolkien Relations Page

Corin.... hope you mostly behaved today.

ksen: Watch out for those dirty bombs.... -- Traffic was really light today, the Dirty Bomb seems to have been an overall benefit to the city.

2J: This poor rottweiler was just minding it's own business when that little banty ASSAULTED him! -- I might be able to train Gidget not to eat the chicken, but I dunno..... she loves to catch things. She kills mouses in the barn, and moles in the yard.... I am trying to teach her not to eat the bunny rabbits. Birds, she loves to chase! Big birds would make her nuts! If I had farm birds, it would be a couple ducks or geese... I like them better.

WNeighbor: see what Hair taught me Corin? I'm dangerous now -- Heh..... Nothing says what you mean better than the perfect smiley gif.

2J: The books have arrived!! -- WOO HOOO! Got enough money to send some goodie treats in boxes with them? Do we need to send more $$$$$$$$$?

RMDupree: This is an example of SPAM! This is an example of SPAM! This is an example of SPAM! This is an example of SPAM! This is an example of SPAM! This is an example of SPAM! --

ksen: I couldn't imagine not living within driving distance to the ocean. -- Me neither.... I can't live in a land-locked state!

WNeighbor: I think I am going to drive up to Ardmore tomorrow and pickett that dadgummed Holiday Inn. WOO HOO!

2J: I got this for the Renegade Chaplain... -- I love that 2J!

WNeighbor: I can't get anybody on the Lone Star thread to answer me -- They seem to like me! I see a lot of posts to me from there but I haven't read them all yet!

JenB: My report card came. All A's! I'm really, really happy -- WOO HOO! Congratulations!

Alkhin: I got a brief note from JRR Tolkien's g-grandson (??) Royd Tolkien, who apparently has set up a basic little site ostensibly to connect with fans of LOTR. -- Woo hoo! - I hope when you are famous you will remember the little people back at the Hobbit Hole!

Yes, it's much easier to talk about... stuff... online. For one thing you don't have to deal with the results of your advice ;)

But you're right... it's just... I've always worked pretty hard, but some of my classes have been very hard. I'm struggling for a 3.7, and my sister currently has a 4.0 - but she's been in Baking and Pastry, hasn't had any intellectual challenges since her Intermediate Algebra course. I guess I'm just a bit resentful that they make a huge deal over her while almost ignoring my accomplishments.

Or at least Mom does, but I understand that she relates better to my sister than she does to me. I've always had more (everything, really) in common with my dad. And he's stand-offish, like me... maybe I picked up from him that emotional displays aren't important.

You and ksen put too much stock in oceans. What will happen to you when the asteroid hits the planet and a tidal wave wipes you out?

I have a bit of big news today too...my first meeting is set in Boise for January 2 -- with the entire Board of Commissioners (nervous, nervous). It's supposedly a meet and greet, but in truth it'll be the full blown interview...they've even asked for all of my references in advance. The good news is that if they go to those lengths now, it may be much easier later on. After that I'm going to head to Salt Lake City for another meet and greet (truly meet and greet this time), and depending on my phone interview with Jackson Hole, maybe I'll go there after SLC.

Big Road Trip in early June. On Sunday the 1st, I drive over 500 miles to get there. Ugh.
