The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I just reread "The Great Divorce" today. It's interesting. Very interesting.
Hi all. My grandmother is gone! My room was rearranged whilst I was out and I think I like it. Nice and roomy. So what's up?

I just reread "The Great Divorce" todayThe only C.S. Lewis I've read is "The Screwtape Letters" and "Chronicles of Narnia". SSQ has several of his books, including "Mere Christianity" and the Space Trilogy, but I haven't read them. He tends to read non-fiction and some Sci-Fi while I lean toward fiction, but I'll get 'Divorce' from the library and give it a whirl.
Glad you have your room back! I'm boucing back and forth between freeping, ordering some t-shirts from Lands End, and fixing Seafood Gumbo for supper. We're gonna watch "Windtalkers" after supper. How about you? You just relaxing, enjoying having your room back?
To: Corin Stormhands
I provide bravado and aroma therapy). Hmm. Some of those aromas might not be very therapeutic!
To: SuziQ
Yes! And I reorganized my shelves. I need more space, too many books are double-stacked.
Also I do not have any books from authors whose names start with 'G', 'X', or 'Q'. Do you think I need to correct that?

I read this 15 or so years ago, thought it was very good at the time, not sure if I'd think so highly of it today, perhaps I'll dig it out and try it again.

Yes, it is good. You know it is the sequel to "Out of the Silent Planet" and "Perelandra"?

I had read those as well, but was less impressed with them, maybe it didn't help that I read them last instead of first.

Thank you, Sam.

I think you would like the Space Trilogy.

Hi all, just stopping in. Now that Illbay is banned (or at least supspended) the Calvin/Arminius wars are heating up again. I'm being kind, but firm. I really don't want to play over there. Just wanted to get things back on a level playing field. It appears that the [FR 5th Amendment]s are no longer controlling the agenda. That's what we wanted.
Gotta go now. Jr. got the Monty Python and the Holy Grail DVD for his birthday (okay, I got it for "him").
We're gonna watch. Or I'm gonna fall asleep. One of the two.

Sleep well :-D

Just tell the Calvinists you were predestined not to take part, and the Arminianists that you do not choose to argue anymore. Nobody will be able to answer you back!

Entertaining myself with the internet, freeping, looking around amazon.com and checking out some art sites. Eating coffee ice cream at the moment.
Jeanne and I watched "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" last night, so I'm wondering if I should switch my name from Sam Cree to Angel Eyes. No, I guess that won't work.
How did Illbay get himself banned? Arguing with Corin?

Heh... I dunno. Probably not with Corin, or he'd be in little axed pieces, not banned.

I read on a thread that another Ringworld book is coming out soon, sort of looking forward to that, except I've kind of forgotten the story line, except the breeding for luck part, which is cool.
What is your take on the possibility of alien life?

Ringworld was a cool concept, but Niven's story was kinda dull. He needs Pournelle for the plots.
I think that there probably isn't any alien life. If there is, it most likely doesn't matter to us because we (personally, never mind our descendents) never meet them. I don't think aliens have visited, because if they had I think we'd all know.
I suppose they could be real but it just doesn't seem like. As Lewis brought up in the Space Trilogy we were discussing a few posts back, it raises some interesting theological questions if there were aliens.
But hey, what's so wrong with saying the whole universe was created with only a single intelligent race, and that the stars were put there for our benefit?

Actually, I can't quite wrap my mind around concepts like "universe" and "infinity" in the first place.
If there is alien life, I'm not very convinced we should go looking for it. I'm not very familiar with the theological ramifications, but would suppose that all of God's creations may not be within my knowledge.
I loved the first 2 "Ringworlds," but less so the third. The pac protector idea I really liked.

I think looking for the aliens would be presumptuous, yes. Especially since we haven't even managed to settle our own backyard... let's get our house in order before inviting guests!
Besides, at least half the time in SF the aliens are unfriendly and like the taste of humans. I'd rather be ready to negotiate from a position of strength, than here at the bottom of the well.
