Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I haven't seen that last one...
Conan? Really!
It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I used to be able to quote lines from the movie -- some of the great cheese lines of all time there.
You know your reputation will probably suffer from having written that? Eh, scratch that, none of our reputations here have anything left to suffer.

LOL!

(derisively known in my current, snobby county as NASCAR county)I'll bet the folks in NASCAR county will be a LOT nicer to live around!!! I didn't grow up on a big lot, the house I remember from when I was little was on a very busy corner and was deep but not very wide. It was nice, actually because we were only about 4 blocks from the downtown which meant no more than 7 block from the library! When I was in high school we moved back to the home my Daddy had built during WWII. Again it was not large, but we owned the lot behind it so it felt larger.
Our summers were spent at our fishing camp which was little houses on tiny lots next door to everybody else. Funny, but I wouldn't want to live that way today, I've gotten used to my privacy. We have almost an acre now. It is only about 100' wide and the neighbors are within 25' on both sides, but it is almost 500' deep so we can't see any neighbors behind us and it feels private. Whenever we move back South, we'll look for several acres and put the house right in the middle, unless it is on a lake, then we'll put it near the water so I can see it from as many places in the house as possible!

Also, I could have sworn I saw PJ's kiddies with the women and children in the caves. Can anyone confirm?Yes. This time they were 'cute Rohan children' instead of 'cute Hobbit children'!

How neat and what cute kids! And how fun that I noticed a movie goof without having someone point it out to me- teehehee.
Re. Aragorn, didn't he receive a new knife in Lothlorien? Am not recalling that too well, right now. Anyhoo, I agree such things are meaningless given the overall scope of the film.
Oh, and one more movie goof. The rocks of the mountains are geologically ill-suited for sparkling calcite caves. They appear to be quite young, rugged, and igneous in nature. Igneous rocks can have cavities (vugs), the surfaces of which can indeed collect gorgeous sparkling mineral deposits. However, you won't find the calcite stalagtite/stalagmite structures as shown in the movie. Ack! What a meaningless quibble!
To: Lil'freeper
I will take your word for it on the caves! Good night everyone.... turning in early, still trying to get my guys to Rivendell. They were delayed in the old forest, but ran into the most delightful unexpected friend!

Conan? Really! You bet! Conan the Barbarian, (not to be confused with the lame sequel), is a fun movie. The score by Poledouris and the visuals tell the story.
James Earl Jones is an awesome baddie. Schwarzenegger was born to play a barbarian. Compared to that pretender, The Rock, Arnie is Shakespearean.
Make sure it is the Collector's Edition DVD -- the commentary track featuring Schwarzenegger and Milius* is entertaining and worth the few extra bucks.
*One of the few conservative directors in Hollywood. This is the same guy who brought us Red Dawn.

Good night Hair, although it's been over 2 hours ago since you posted that.
I got the boys in bed about the time you said good night, then went to the grocery store for some leisurely shopping. Now it's 10:30pm and I'm finishing up baking a disaster of a pumpkin pie...the aluminum foil I used to keep the crust from browning too fast stuck and pulled half the crust off. I dumped in too much spice...I think, I haven't tasted it yet, but the "quick pumpkin pie mix in a can" smelled bland, so i thought I'd dump in a touch and it ended up being a lot. I thought "Oh well, live life on the edge..." and mixed it in without trying to remove any.
Sigh...

Ok, since there's no one here, I'll post some pictures of my day...
This is the birdhouse that Matthew got Steve for Christmas. The boys are watching him hammer it together in this first picture. Joshua was a little bored, I think:

Now these pictures were taken in the shop that Steve and I gutted and completely re-did. I use it as a school room, sometimes. Here the boys are priming the birdhouse with primer. Joshua was very serious about it, but Matthew was extremely interested in the paint on his hand!

Next are two pictures of me priming my owl house that Steve was busy making in the pictures above:

I used to be able to quote lines from the movieOne favorite, often quoted on FR....
"What is best in life?"
"Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women."

I'll bet the folks in NASCAR county will be a LOT nicer to live around!!! You bet! Have already met a few of the future neighbors- salt-of-the-earth types, good people. Lots of wooded areas for kids to build forts and have adventures in. It's a good place.
The current county (pronounced "cowney" by the natives) is full of McMansion developments- the housing equivalent of fast food- with these giant houses set on postage-stamp pieces of land. The homeowners are pretentious as heck and their kids, having nowhere to play, end up roaming up and down the streets getting into mischief. I just can't bear the thought of joining that lifestyle. Space = sanity. NASCAR Cowney here I come!

Took a couple of geology courses whilst going to school in Northern Arizona complete with field trips to the Grand Canyon and all the great parks of southern Utah. It has been a hobby, and occasionly a passion, ever since. Even helped write an elective geology course back when I was teaching. I LOVE that stuff.
Even though the "caves were all wrong!!!", PJ has done quite well using New Zealand as a setting for ME. The events of the stories took place when the Earth was rather young and, from the characters' perspectives, recently "broken" and changed. Thus, you would expect to see a very rugged landscape- with jagged exposures of rock, vicious looking mountains. New Zealand, being geologically "young", is perfect for this. It is a subtle cue that the story takes place in another time, long ago, when the world was still fresh and uneroded.
Was an expensive weekend- we bought a house (to be built). And we saw TTT again.
How was your weekend?

Faramir gets better every time.
Three times, and I agree with that.
