The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Anybody running Windows 9x should go to this Microsloth site and download this package:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/WUToys/W95KernelToy/Default.asp

One of the "toys" is WINTOP. Run it from the "run..." box, and it gives you a list of all processes that are running, and how much CPU time each is using. If you see a CPU hog, you'll at least have its name, and can do further research. For some tasks, it will allow you to cancel them.

This function is built-in to Windows NT, 2K, and XP via ctl-alt-del.

Another Windows 9x tool that might already be on your computer is MSCONFIG. It's also run from the "run box". It shows where lots of programs are started from, and gives you some control over them.

That's a very rough view of things, but I hope it helps.

a very good book, "Americas 30 Years War," by Balint Vaszonyi

Didn't he just die recently? I seem to remember reading about this book at the time of his death. I'd never heard of him before.

You're not being pedantic, honey! I love History; learning about where things came from helps understand them much better. You can bet that when we get to the French Revolution in homeschool, I'll be using lots of this info!!

Any idea why my computer (at home) would suddenly work very slowly?

Some things you can check...

1. Check the space available on your hard drive; if it's almost full, that could cause everything to run more slowly as Windows tries to create "virtual memory" files.

2. Once Windows comes up, right click the "My Computer" icon, then click "Properties" to see how many system resources are available. If you're down below 90% free just after a reboot, it's a sign that your registry is becoming too large and you may need to save your data, reformat, and reload Windows. Operating with less then 80% of system resources available can really make your system sluggish.

If the problem is just with Explorer, then it may be something with your connection. If the problem is happening with other programs, then it's probably something with your system.

Good luck with it!

Glad to hear that they didn't find anything wrong. Just out of curiosity, did they check her gall bladder for stones when they did the ultrasound?

Also, I've been wondering, have you finished the Amber books? If so, what did you think of them?

2J, that looks to me like a shot from Lothlorien, when he makes up his poem about Gandalf's fireworks.

Here's a comparison shot:

(BTW, that link won't work permanently, just a temporary route while my site's still sort of "offline.")

You are Aredhel Ar-Feiniel
You are Aredhel Ar-Feiniel, the White Lady of the
Noldor, who loved to ride and hunt in the
forests. Seduced by the Eol the Dark Elf, you
lived with him in seclusion for many years
before fleeing with your son, Maeglin. Eol
pursued you and when, in his anger he threw a
javelin at Maeglin, you threw yourself between
them and were slain protecting your son from
the wrath of his father.

Which Elf chick are you from Tolkien's Quenta Silmarillion?

Well, there you go. LOL Go figure.

Hey, I don't know when Steve is going to come home, because apparently his class was cancelled, but I think he must have gone to school anyway to work on his papers (he has two major papers due). So we can start in the chatroom here in a few...but I may have to exit quickly.

It's true, LCS needs to get his act together, and get a new computer, we need his history expertise and calculations, and of course, his company.

G: what's wrong, stocking a bit light, some fire scars on a couple, looks fairly recent. Any hickory?, that's good bow wood.
