The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Doesn't it seem that this thread is getting pretty big pretty fast? I'm just saying it was July before we'd posted this much last year. But I'm not very good at getting mathmatics across! LOL

Somehow it is not a surprise that it all grows from a French tradition.

You're right, Sam. The idea stemmed from the Communards in France after the time of the French Revolution. Do you know where I learned that? From a TV show about a Western outpost that I guess was on the border between Canada and the US. There was a sherrif and a Mountie in the town. The episode was about a man who had emigrated, and someone recognized him as having been a Communard and was wanted for murder or something like that in France. Maybe Engels and Marx ripped off the idea.

And who says TV isn't educational?

I'm off to Walmart to stretch our legs and get some fresh air...supposed to start snowing again tomorrow and we'll be stuck in all day again.

At least the garage door opens...once I got it open, I heavily salted underneath it...the ice melted and it's since all dried up.

I wonder when the ROTK preview is going to come out in March? My line party is planning a gathering prior to going to see it and I was planning on doing something fun (likely go see my friend's band play) for my birthday.

Did you guys see this? I'm sure it's in another thread, but if you tend to just stay at one thread like I do, you might have missed it.

Danish pizzeria bans French and Germans

I love this: He added: "Frenchmen have a lifetime ban here. Their attitude toward the United States will never change."

Bwahahaha

Somehow it is not a surprise that it all grows from a French tradition.

I once read someone who said all the evils of the 20th century are the bastard children of the French Revolution. It created a religious fervor that led to dictatorship, terror, and socialism. Plus an academic respectability that allowed one to support all those evils, proclaim oneself pure of heart, and the other guy the devil, and deserving of death. The most murderous and cowardly leftists of the 20th century all attended French universities.

Ha! I have quit watching TV about 12 years ago, but it's true, there is some great stuff mixed in with the junk.

Yeah, the egalitarianism of the French Revolution was the beginning of socialism, later "perfected" by the Germans. The fact that the French revolution was followed by the Reign of Terror and the guillotine was indicative of what would follow in the 20th century, the execution, in the name of the greater good, of apparently over 100 million. Thanks, France.

I first learned of the "French tradition," which is socialism, vs. the "English tradition," which is individual rights, and which was the foundation of the U.S.A, by reading a very good book, "Americas 30 Years War," by Balint Vaszonyi, followed by reading the even more elegant and carefully reasoned works of F.A. Hayek. "The Road to Serfdom" by Hayek should be required reading for every college in the country, but never will while academia is controlled by the Left.

One of the poignant and charming things to me about the works of Tolkien is how clearly the English tradition of individual rights shows through as a foundation of the society of what he refers to as the "free peoples of Middle Earth." Sad that modern England has seemingly abandoned the English tradition in favor of the French.

Miss Q, would you forgive me for this exercise in pedantry?

we're way ahead in this thread than we were at the same time last year.

And relatively spam-free too!

Yay! The tree is off the driveway!

I wish it would stop raining on the weekend. I have yard work to do. My daylilies are coming up and I need to divide them.

Congrats on the Precioussss.

Yeah, the cheese eating surrender monkeys are acting true to their history, somehow :-D

I find France a charming place, but about most of the time, the French are so aggravating and arrogant.

Dawn, I love your pizza article, am sending it around.

8 central is too late. How about 7? 8 Eastern, that is?

Look! Quiz for the ladies! (Hope the picture shows up....)

You are Idril Celebrindal
You are Idril Celebrindal, mother of Earendil the
Blessed. You spurned the forbidden love of your
cousin Maeglin, giving your heart instead to
the mortal Tuor. In secret you constructed a
tunnel out of the city, suspecting Maeglin's
treachery, so that when Gondolin was attacked
you were able to lead your family and a small
following of friends to safety in Arvernian.
When Tuor grew old you sailed with him into the
West and were never again seen in Middle-earth.

Which Elf chick are you from Tolkien's Quenta Silmarillion?
brought to you by Quizilla
