The Homeland Security Bill passed, Judge Shedd was accepted as the President's nominee to the U. S. Court of Appeals, and I think the terrorism insurance bill passed, too. YAHOO!!!

Dang! All the good stuff happens when I'm busy. But I'm glad it happens!

Back to the kitchen for a little while. Time to check on the cakes.

Kay, do you know when Pickering and Owen will be renominated? Do you think the president will wait until the next session?

I'd like to say hello to a certain somebody that we haven't had a chance to meet yet. I hope this person finds their way clear to join us soon.

You know who you are.

To your friend ......

.

I don't have any idea about the votes on Pickering and Owens. Bush may just wait til after the first of the year. Because Thurmond submitted Shedd's name, it was symbolically important to get him approved before this session ended since Strom won't be back.

Ack! A connection under the kitchen sink just failed catastrophically. Everything is moved out and I'm using a box fan to try to dry it out, but it looks like I'll be replacing some wood under the sink. After school. Tomorrow. Sheesh!

But the cakes look good.

YIKES! Make sure it's completely, totally dry before replacing the wood. If you can leave it open for a while to dry out it would be better, rather than just trusting in the fan. Any moisture at all that you trap with your new construction will cause big problems ahead.

That's semi-professional advice, John. Our company doesn't do disaster restoration but we hear talk about it at conventions and such.

I think this sesion is over. they would have delayed but Tomorrow Talent gets finalizes and then the Repubicans would take control. Daschle wanted this over before that happened.

I posted a note or two earlier that especially in lame duck sessions the side with the votes wants to vote. And the side without the votes wants to debate. The debating side needs to impress its supporters that it did all it could.

There was the 52 to 47 vote on the admendments. That was symbolic. But the important thing to remember that the real vote was on cloture. That was 65 to 29. That is a very very very important ratio.

That shows that daschle does not have 40 votes to fillibuster in 2003. It looks like he has perhaps 32 or maybe 33 with the incomming senators. The important vote in the senate is always cloture. You know what is going to happen when the cloture vote is taken. The rest is just cover your butt. The final was 90 to 9.

There was talk that to get the votes Lott had to promise to bring up the 7 added issues in the next congress. That is a bone to throw to the Democrats so they can explain their fold on homeland security. They could not get ahold of hastert. Uhhhh HMmmmm But lott promised to ask him to bring them up in the house... Un huh.

This was the democrats folding becuase they did not have the votes. They don't have 40 votes in the lame duck. They will not have them in the next senate.

What that means is that 10 to 15 Democratic Senators went along with Daschle out of party loyalty to win an election. That blew up in their faces. They are not likely to follow Daschle down the road again.

This next Senate looks more and more like it is every crat for himself.

The options in the Iraq situation are two. We got to war and after it is over oil drops to $17 a barrel. The other option is we don't go to war and oil drops ot $17 a barrel. The productivity is way up, intererst rates are low, and after the Iraq we are slated for a 1994-1995 economy.

Unless somehting really terrible happens 2004 looks like a Bush andslide, 58 or 59 senate seats, and 233 house members.... and a supreme court where Thomas and Scalia are the liberal ones.

Thanks for the advice. I've got the plumbing part fixed. I'm going to rip out the wood floor of the cabinet under the sink (there is the concrete slab under that). It's going to stay open and the flooring ripped out until I'm sure it's ok. With the fan on.

That old horse-stall box-fan has helped me a lot in the last couple of weeks. I'm not going to throw it away just because it's ugly. ;>)

You just may get another stripe before graduation.

I'm due one, according to my reading of the regulations. They took away my 5 level because it was out of date, and kept me from getting Ssgt. New trainees have to have 15 months as a 5 level to be eligible (USAFR) for Staff. REtrainees (which I am) only require 9 months of ojt and their 5 level for Staff. Which I have when I pass the next test.

I'll be bringing the correct AFRs to everyone's attention next drill. When the commander is in a good mood, and happy with me. I'm remembering how to play the game.

After all his "concern" and "disappontment" and you-know-what, little Tommy ended up voting AYE on the Homeland Security bill.

The Nays were Akaka (D-HI), Byrd (D-WV), Feingold (D-WI), Hollings (D-SC), Inouye (D-HI), Jeffords (I-VT), Kennedy (D-MA), Levin (D-MI), Sarbanes (D-MD).

Tommy didn't even have the courage of his convictions!

You guys can get off my back now. I just now caught and killed a mouse.

Wonder of wonders, one of those little wooden mouse traps caught him and then I tossed him, trap and all, into a pail of water and capsized his little "raft" until he quit moving.

Meanwhile, my wife was in the other room praying for him to die quickly.

By the way, these two mice I caught today are very tiny brown mice. Probably field mice, I guess.

LOL! Winter time's a comin'. Mice move into the house when it gets cold. You might see if the sticky traps are available in your area. They work really well. As do the electric zapper traps.

All of this information is from dealing with mice in the garage. We don't have problems with mice in the house. We have 5 1/2 indoor cats. ;>)

John's right about the weather probably driving them in. We used to live in a neighborhood that was close to being in the boonies ..... was on the edge of a town with a population of 240. There were fields nearby and woods beside our house. It wasn't an everyday occurence but we did get mice in the house from time to time ..... and they were so tiny I almost felt sorry for them.

We finally learned (after getting a flying squirrel in the attic) that moth balls in the attic help keep such critters out ..... if you can stand the smell. Our kids hated it ...... it nearly drove them out of the house, too ...... :-)

Rat poison in the attic works for us. We get squirrels every once in a while. I still don't know how they get in. And when they move in, they tend to make noises like they are bowling with a square bowling ball in the attic.

So we keep the feeders full in the attic, and we don't have a problem. There have been a couple of houses around here that burned down because of squirrels in the attic chewing on wires. We prefer to avoid that.
