This is our own corner of Free Republic where homeschoolers can discuss what curriculum we use, vent when needed, share our successes, compare notes, alert each other to things we find on the internet, and vent some more.

yesterday i was at a family gathering--a birthday celebration. since we were an hour away from home, and since we were going to be starting school this morning, i mentioned to my family that we had to leave by 6 p.m. in a very enthusiastic voice, i said that Jonathan (my 6 yr. old) was beginning school tomorrow. to my dismay, nobody responded w/any type of interest or excitement... in fact, i believe they were mocking me with comments like, "can't you just start on Tuesday?" "just take a teacher-in-service day, hahahahaha!" it bothered me because i know that when other kids in our family are about to go back to school, everyone talks with them about it... "oh, Marisa, are you excited about school starting tomorrow?" or "oh, Kenny--what did you learn in school yesterday?" or "so, Christopher--blah, blah, blah." but nobody even mentioned anything to Jonathan... i was really hurt... it makes me want to take Jon on all these wonderful field trips everyday just to "show them." however, i come back to reality, and know that Jon's education has nothing to do with proving anything to them. anyway, we start school in about an hour, and i am still very excited.

I understand what you're saying, latina. My husbands family is the same way. They're 'all over' the other kids but never inquire how school is going with our daughter. To them, we're odd and not schooling our child.

I'm sorry that happened to you! *I'M* excited for you! When your family starts to see how great he does, I bet they'll show more interest.

Does anyone know of a good on-line writing course? I e-mailed a company and asked if they work with eighth graders and I got this response:
"Hello Candi
Yes, we have worked with younger students. We have success when their is
support at home, and since your son is home schooled, I think that will be
good.
Our short program is very structured, Monday is the day to send exercises
for the week - usually three - with the answers sent separately. Tuesday we
send a vocabulary exercise. Each day, the students write for at least 10
minutes and on Friday, they send their best writing of the week. We correct
the writing and return it on Monday. On Wednesday, we ask for the writing to
be re-sent to us in a revised form. The course covers six weeks, so each
student has six graded pieces and six re-writes along with the vocabulary
and exercises covering sentence and paragraph structure.
Let me know if this has answewed your questions."
The writing is awful! Do you think this person is an instructor? And even if she isn't, do you think that the company should have its correspondence person make a good impression with her writing?

Correct or re-write their paper and send it back to them just for fun! I'll tell you, I'm at a loss for what to do. Part of me would like to do what you suggested, but if the person who wrote this is not an instructor, I don't want to hurt her feelings. Now, do I want to hurt her feelings if she IS the instructor? LOL Probably not...

I used to always get the question..."So are you still homeschooling Noelle?"... I never ask the parents of public school children, "So, is Johnny still attending public school?"

to my dismay, nobody responded w/any type of interest or excitement... in fact, i believe they were mocking me I get the same reaction from our family. My father has been the most outspoken about it; he thinks it's terrible that we aren't sending the oldest (age 6) to first grade. No amount of reasoning with him seems to do any good.
To: goodieD
Maybe you should ask that!
That's my problem... I'm confrontational!

I think its because they don't know what to say. They are out of their element. They have no context in which to form a meaningful question.
Try feeding them context and see if they will respond.
"I received the curriculim in the mail last week. It is actually fun for me to go throught the material and anticipate what will be happening in the next year. It is as if I am the student. I find it exciting and a little intimidating at the same time."
