A Partial Eclipse Over the Golden Gate Bridge
Credit & Copyright: Gerard Barkats

Explanation: Part of the Sun disappeared behind the Moon earlier this week. Previously, the waning Moon was best visible from all places on Earth during the early morning hours because it led the Sun. As the Moon orbited the Earth, however, the Sun caught up to it and passed it on the sky. Now the waxing Moon trails the Sun and is therefore best visible just after sunset. Each month, as viewed from the Earth, the Sun appears to lap the Moon and the cycle repeats. Sometimes when the Moon passes the Sun, it goes directly in front of part of it, causing a partial eclipse. Pictured above, a time lapse sequence shows the Moon passing the Sun on June 10 behind the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, USA.

This photo is a nice example of a multiple exposure. Good setting, too!

Incredible shot of my favorite bridge. Favorite sun, for that matter. I did not see eclipse and rarely see antything going on in the sky, as I live under cloud cover in Puget Sound. Always appreciate these photos. Thanks.

Is that a link on your post to me? It's not working. Thanks for trying. I am curious. Is the Southern Cross the same only in the southern hemisphere? (same constellation I mean.)

No, that's just an unlinked photo. To see where it originated, right click on it and select "properties". Its URL will appear.

No, the Southern Cross is a completely different constellation, visible only south of 30 degrees north latitude. The only places in the US that fit that description are south Florida, south Texas, and Hawaii.

See my APOD post for 4-25-02 for a view of the Southern Cross and Mauna Loa in Hawaii.

A small photo of the Southern Cross:
