What Does The Current Version Have That The Beta Does Not?

Posted on 03/26/2002 9:49:03 AM PST by John Robinson

I will wrap up the beta and install it this weekend.

What necessary functions are available in the current version of Free Republic's software that are not available in the beta?

The current version is easier on the eyes, if you ask me.

How so?

I am honored that you have asked me to elaborate on my opinion.

On the beta version I find that the type is too large, and the sans serif face, along with all the bold, really makes the screen look very crowded. True, it is sufficiently functional to see what's there, but it is confusing to the eye amd not so immediately apparent what is a post headline and what is copy -- especially with the body copy of the post in bold type. I actually find it very distracting.

I always thought (even before the Beta) that the current version was extremely elegant. There is lots of white space, and the post headlines clearly stand-out because of the serif type face in the smaller size.

I haven't seen in beta where you can search on replies from a user. Is it there and I am just not seeing how to do it?

I happen to agree with you about the bolded first part of the lead-ins being too cluttery. I liked how it was yesterday or the day before.

The new version is aestheticlly pleasing - quite the work of art. Your efforts are to be commended and all features seem to be working. Not being able to live without the breaking news sidebar, I inserted it immediately upon trying the beta version. (When the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center, I learned of it here - in breaking news.) Personally, I'd like to see a touch more space available in this third column for easier reading of items in the right hand sidebar.

Thank you, sir, for a wonderful site.

The hairline rules (underlines) underneath the thread's name really help the current version.

I think it would be better to have the text of articles, in the teasers, be a smaller font than the title.

I am not finding a way to get "More compression" .

For example , on replies to and from me I just want to see one line and then key on the red to see the ones I have not yet viewed.

It may be there but I have not figured out how to toggle it!

Old eyes perhaps!

My eyes need the red to be a bit more intense or redder or whatever,
its a bit hard to recognize posts I have not yet viewed or replied to!
