As New Yorkers cast their ballots in Tuesday’s race for governor, the state’s economic health looms large: 34% of likely voters say taxes, jobs and inflation are the most important issues facing the Empire State, Emerson College pollsters found.
Those voters should consider which candidate will stop piling up the government debt that will soon cripple budgets — and will stick our kids with a massive bill.
For decades, New York’s leaders have been spending money on a credit card that nobody in power ever tries to pay off.
But every dollar borrowed eventually comes back as higher taxes, service cuts and unbearable interest costs.
When you combine the debt of the state, city and county governments and school districts, every New Yorker owes $37,000, a new Reason Foundation report found — the highest per-capita debt load in the nation.
The Empire State’s combined government debt is over $744 billion, second only to California’s $1 trillion.
At the local level, New York City is in crisis — even if it hasn’t admitted it yet.
NYC is tied with Chicago as America’s most fiscally stressed city governments, far worse than all others.
The Reason Foundation analysis found that both cities trigger seven of the eight warning signs economists use to measure long-term financial health and short-term cash flow.
The two cities have extremely high debt loads, deeply negative unrestricted net positions and precarious cash positions, limiting their ability to weather future economic shocks or maintain current government service levels without future tax increases.
New York’s liabilities are staggering: The city has $315.9 billion in total liabilities but only $156.6 billion in assets — that is, its obligations are about twice its assets.

NY/NYC is forever flucked .
If NYS and NYC would vote for this, Deep State wouldn’t have to steal our elections.
NY State has been sending out rebate checks to residents to help with their utility bills since 2021. I’ve been retired since 2003, and this is the first year I’ve ever gotten a check. They sent me $100. My oldest son told me that he’s been getting them every year. She must be really concerned about this election to have sent me a check after all this time. Can’t wait to vote for Bruce Blakeman on Tuesday.
This is a bill anyone can dodge, just by moving to another state.
UH-UO.
NY and California should have no worries. The USA should pay them amounts such as are given out in foreign aid. American taxpayers know it’s important to keep socialist initiatives and open borders policies working no matter how much it costs the rest of the country. /S
They're assuming that the Democrats will take care of it for them. All they have to do is to show up to vote.
Impossible. Mamdani is still smiling and people are trying to get his autograph. He seems to know everything is just fine.
You’re right. If something good is on TV they may not show up.
The NYC/NYS business plan when they collapse, along with that of California, is to have the Federal Government bail them out, i.e., the rest of the country.

Hochul’s rebate checks hit mailboxes across NY with just days until midterms: ‘Election-year scam’
You won’t avoid it that way if the Democrats get back in. Federal bailouts will be back.
Yes, more proof of the profound statement: You can’t fix stupid!
if you can get out get out I would wager that a lot of people can’t get out and if you can get out and you want to stay then pay up and what you grappling about it I don’t believe there’s enough voters that have enough sense to overturn the dimwits in New York
