Melanoma

Posted on 10/30/2026 5:24:16 AM PDT by far sider

My boss's wife just had a large melanoma removed from her back. They think she may have a small ocular melanoma.

My family had a bad experience with that type of cancer in a relative.

Do any of you have any knowledge of the best place in the country to be treated for melanoma? Thanks.

I don’t know the best place but I would ask their doctor or what else can be done to mitigate risk. I don’t think they would be insulted.

I can only relate to my personal experience, and that would be the Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa, FL. They have a specialized unit for cutaneous cancers.

If you have the means, check out Duke. They have the best Doctors. But I live in NC. Had a couple of family members treated there. They are the best.

I am at risk for skin cancer. I get a check up each year with a dermatologist.

My Mother died from it. It was in her spine, hips and skull.

“My boss’s wife just had a large melanoma removed from her back. They think she may have a small ocular melanoma.”

You say the melanoma was removed from her back but then say she may have a small ocular melanoma, ocular meaning it would be in the eye and is a very rare cancer. Is that in addition to the melanoma removed from her back?

Anything having to do with serious eye conditions including cancer of the eye, I would recommend the Wilmer Eye Institute which is part of Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Me too. I am a fair skinned green eyed, freckled redhead of Nordic and English heritage, with many small moles, who experienced many blistering sunburns before I knew better.

As a teen I thought I could get one of those beautiful tans I saw in TV commercials if I slathered myself in baby oil and coco butter and laid out in the sun for hours. All I got was blisters and once a sunburn so painful I couldn't walk and missed a week of school.

I'm like the poster child for being at risk for skin cancer and get at skin survey done yearly with a dermatologist.

A skin survey isn't painful but is a bit intrusive. The dermatologist will not only look at your skin in areas where there was sun exposure, but your scalp, mouth, between your toes, look at your nails and toenails, in your a$$ crack and hoo hoo, under your breasts, pretty much everywhere on your body because a melanoma can manifest in areas not exposed to the sun.

We are in southern Ohio.

She has a spot on her eye. She will find out today if it's melanoma. They say it could be a "freckle" or something else. She is being seen at OSU. I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was a better place.

My stepmother had her eye removed in 2008 due to an ocular melanoma. In 2010, they found it in her liver and she was dead 4 months later. I'm still a little traumatized.

MD Anderson in Houston for cancer, but others mentioned here won’t be bad.

Mayo would be a possibility, too.

Clevland Clinic has a cancer center and they are your closest top of the line.

I was treated by Honor Health in Surprise, AZ with surgery at MD Anderson in Gilbert. That was stomach cancer.

That’s what happened to my younger brother. Had a spot removed from his back & 15 years later, he had spine, brain & cancer in his legs.

If the person is in the Omaha area, UNMC has a huge cancer wing, but I can’t speak to their specialties.

Ocular cancer... ugh! Boston has highly skilled cancer docs. Stayed at a LA Quinta pretty cheaply, and they had service to take folks to hospital which was very nice and convenient (I wasn’t there for cancer, but another health issue- pituitary tumor... went there because the surgeon was top doc in that surgery, and they had state of art imaging guidance... only prob is the guidance broke down like 2 days before my surgury... doc had to do surgery old fashioned way. Just my luck.) Boston hospital, has good reputation. I got quality treatment there.

Anyway, sorry to hear but the eye cancer for your boss’s wife. Hope it can be taken care of without losing sight in eye.

Individuals seeking the latest immunological treatments for melanoma in the US should primarily go to NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, specialized melanoma/cutaneous oncology programs, or authorized cell therapy centers. These facilities offer FDA-approved immunotherapies, access to cutting-edge clinical trials, multidisciplinary expertise (dermatologists, surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, and immunologists), and personalized approaches based on tumor genetics (e.g., BRAF status), stage, and prior treatments.

Where to Access These Treatments NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers (best starting point for latest options and trials): These deliver cutting-edge care and run most innovative melanoma immunotherapy trials. Use the NCI locator tool (cancer.gov/research/infrastructure/cancer-centers/find) to find one near you or worth traveling to. There are ~74 NCI centers across 37 states + DC.

Particularly strong in melanoma/immunotherapy:

UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (Los Angeles) — Leader in PD-1 research, combinations, and mRNA vaccine trials (Ribas lab).
Moffitt Cancer Center (Tampa, FL) — High-volume melanoma program, strong in TIL, vaccines, and trials.
MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston) — Top-ranked overall; extensive melanoma and immunotherapy programs.
Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) (New York) — Pioneers in immunotherapy and cellular therapies.
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Boston) — Dedicated Melanoma Treatment Center with strong trial access.
Others: Mayo Clinic (multiple sites), UCSF, Massachusetts General Hospital, Penn Abramson Cancer Center, Roswell Park, City of Hope, Stanford.

Mrs. BBB333 had her melanoma stage 3C removed at the Huntsman in SLC.

Start the Joe Tippens protocol ASAP.

As do I. Had a small spot removed from my neck two years ago. My dermatologist sees me once year in November. My older brother goes in every six months as he’s had a handful of spots removed from his face.

“Moffitt”

I think the further south you go the more experience doctors will have.

You might want to look up some of the doctors listed:

https://www.eyecancercure.com/the-ajcc-uicc-eye-cancer-task-force.html

https://eyecancer.com/eye-cancer/conditions/choroidal-tumors/choroidal-melanoma/

Also look up treatments.
