What began as an extraordinary opportunity to spend retirement exploring the world has turned into a financial and logistical nightmare. A residential cruise ship promising years of international travel has abruptly suspended operations, leaving more than 200 passengers, many of them Americans, searching for accommodations thousands of miles from home.

Sounds to me like one of those too-good-to-be-true situations turned out to be not true.
Can’t imagine those docking fees adding up so all that time out to sea can’t be that appealing. Mighta been doing them a favor.
Stupid from the start.
They’re probably all sick of each other anyway. It’s a blessing in disguise.
This sounds way too good to be true. Especially if you are putting yourself at the mercy of a cruise ship company that is not that well known.
Having done 55+ cruises all over the world, take my advice and book only with major cruise companies, and never more than 14 days cruise. Those retirement plans with small outfits are highly risky. I recommend a 14 day cruise from Barcelona and visit many countries as far as Greece and Turkey. The one sailing from Southampton, England is also very good but weather near England can be cold & damp for a day or two until hitting ports in Portugal or Spain.
Probably fun while it lasted. I suspect they were all rich to start with to even consider doing this. If they didn’t put all their eggs in one basket, I’m sure they’ll survive.
"Holiday in Cambodia" - Dead Kennedys
The mini reactor thing would be cool if there are no problems with it.
I wonder how the Cambodians feel about having all of these bewildered retirees wandering around looking for 3 hots and a cot.
Just cash cows to them.
Maybe even a new source of slave labor.
ROTFL! The Colonel Kurtz Retirement Program!!! Nice!
10 days was the MAX I could handle on a cruise ship.
I suspect that the concept sold to the passengers was that a substantial portion of the money paid be invested in a secure high yield portfolio.
Income from that would support ship crew, operations, docking fees, and maintenance expenses.
But naturally, that money was quickly stolen by consulting fees, legal fees, management fees and other mechanisms.
They are lucky the boat didn’t get stranded in Karachi or Bombay
Overall, Cambodia is not a bad place to be dropped off.
Retired life on a beach in Cambodia would be cheaper, and far more colorful, than any Villages Community in Florida.
Could you rank the cruise companies you’d pick or have used?
You have massive insight. My wife and I have been talking about taking our first cruise, but the obvious ones aren’t necessarily the best or consistently reviewed one way or the other.
I assume the passengers would need to sue in the court where the ship is registered, good luck with that!
They could do much worse than being let off in Cambodia. Imagine if they’d been kicked off in Mozambique or similar.

My sis & BIL are on a 50-day, round-trip from/to Ft. Lauderdale. They pulled out of Barcelona a few days ago, just a few hours ahead of the political protests there.
Cruise cancelled a port in Italy this week — Naples, I think — but no reason was given. Now they’re in Greece and are a bit worried about Turkey.
Hubby doesn’t want to go longer than two weeks. I won’t go shorter than two weeks. (Stalemate?) It’s just not worth it to me, considering all the pre-planning that goes in to it — and I’m the guy who does it all. And we are resisting flying.
Had a great 16-day round trip between Los Angeles and Hawaii. Panama canal was good, too. Also 16 days.
