I thought Odysseus was fiction. There’s no such place as Middle Earth.

RE: New York....

And as Bob Costas once said sitting in a cafe:
“We can put a man on the Moon but how come no one can make a decent egg cream outside of Brooklyn?” 🥛🌎

Doesn’t solve anything but I just thought of it.

Video Transcript Summary:

Homer's Ithaca Reevaluation

While modern Ithaca has long been assumed to be Odysseus’s home, its physical landscape directly conflicts with Homeric geography:

The Palicki Peninsula Theory

In 2005, researcher Robert Biddleston proposed that Odysseus’s homeland was Palicki, Cephalonia’s westernmost peninsula. He supported this by citing the Greco-Roman geographer Strabo, who described a narrow isthmus on Cephalonia that was frequently submerged from sea to sea. Initial geological testing aimed to prove that seismic activity had filled an ancient marine channel, isolating Palicki as an island during the Homeric era.

Subsequent geological analysis refined this hypothesis:

Linguistic and Textual Evidence

As geological proof of an ancient Palicki island weakened, scholar James Diggle turned to Homeric vocabulary and poetic structure to revive the theory. His analysis reveals consistent textual patterns distinguishing Ithaca from actual islands:

Scholarly Implications

The convergence of revised geological data and meticulous Homeric linguistics strongly supports identifying Palicki as Odysseus’s true homeland. While ancient geography cannot be pinpointed with absolute certainty, the evidence demonstrates that Homer intentionally avoided labeling Ithaca as an island and instead used precise topographical and linguistic markers consistent with a peninsula. This theory resolves longstanding textual contradictions and reframes our understanding of Homeric geographic accuracy and literary craftsmanship. Researchers continue to validate these findings, making them a compelling framework for interpreting the Odyssey’s setting.

Apparently Odysseus didn’t know where it was either...took him 20 years to find it.

Revisionist bitch!

Ithaca then! Ithaca now!

It was an oral history settled by a blind man a couple centuries after the fact.....which the all experts all called “legendary”, until 1871 when some Kraut got off his chair, followed the directions, and dug a hole.

Maybe Homer’s blind “ass”essment of rocky differed from most (toes stubs per mile?) and guaranteed he could not read a freaking map! East? West? He could not tell which side was printed!....wait.....they did not print then.

Just one more permanent marker in my world I did not have to worry about until the “chix w/dix” and Wakandan Egyptians were black crowd weighted in!

But, that is just my opinion and I do not feel strongly about it.
