The SS United States finally has a sinking date to become the world's largest artificial reef.
The 990-foot ship, which was docked in Philadelphia for decades, will be deployed in the Gulf of Mexico about 22 nautical miles southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach on Nov. 12, according to an Okaloosa County, Florida, spokesperson.
A sendoff ceremony will be held for the SS United States on Nov. 11. The deployment date could change based on the weather.

Thanks to a couple of Freepers, I learned about this ship some weeks ago. This is a good video that my husand and I are watching tonight:
I guess there is simply nothing else it’s good for at this point. It would be too expensive and use too many hours of labor to dismantle, then the salvaged material still wouldn’t have any practical use, not in such immense quantities.
They’re salvaging iconic parts of it as museum pieces, including the propeller, smoke stacks, cocktail bar, etc.
Good training job for wannabe welders who just happen to be experiencing the joys of anal sex in the jails.
