Republicans view the Minnesota Senate race as a potential pickup opportunity in the 2026 midterm elections, even as they face an increasingly difficult national environment in the final stretch of the campaign.
The Minnesota Senate race shifted from Likely Democratic to Lean Democratic in the Cook Political Report as a flurry of recent polls showed a tight race between Democratic Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan and retired broadcaster Michele Tafoya, a Republican.
While Republicans are dealing with challenging headwinds nationally, Democrats are having their own difficulties in Minnesota, experts told Newsweek. The race presents Republicans a pickup opportunity in a cycle that has been difficult for their party.
Democrats have faced backlash over Democratic Governor Tim Walz’s handling of a fraud scandal in the general election, which has become a flash point in the Senate race, with Flanagan facing scrutiny over her proximity to Walz.
Fraud and Corruption Among Top Issues
There is "no doubt" the race is competitive as Flanagan has had a difficult time shaking the fraud backlash, Larry Jacobs, political scientist at the University of Minnesota, told Newsweek on Monday.

Republicans pounced. I get it.
Wow… Gee… thats a shame …🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Fake polls and fake concern from fake news.
Minnesota is the tip of the spear for the 2026 Republican sweep.
Should be the Gov., Senate, and AG, but the DFL fraud machine won’t let that happen.
Get some Elon money in there. It bites to lose by one point. Get out the vote.
Hopefully someday we will finally hit bottom and go back toward our original moral standards and practices.
Minnesota needs to flip...
oh nose, they are shaken. You know if the leftwing NewsWeak says it that means it’s fake and it’s some lefty/useless tool for the democrat party dumb opinions. snore.
Ignore all leftwing medias folks. Even the mainstream ones: ABC, CBS, NBC, PBR, etc. You won’t get smarter from it or the truth.
Now, why would ICE be a problem?
