It's about to really cut loose here (vanity)

In my part of Texas, oil, gas, and timber drives the economy. I made an observation in a family meeting yesterday that it's really starting to break loose here. The local RV parks that are usually empty during the week, are filling up with oilfield workers. The oil and gas personnel that I know who are involved in site prep are working overtime. My son-in-law is one, and he is now working 36 hour shifts.

I've been holding off doing a thinning cutting on one of my timber tracts because the price has been so low. But, last week my timber manager came to me and told me it was time to cut, as the prices were up 30% over what they were in the summer. Not just for the sawlogs, but the mills are crying for sweetgum. This is normally non-marketable timber, except when the oil companies are looking to buy it for what they call "derrick flooring." Right now the mills can't get enough of it to meet the demand. And, a lot of timber is coming in to the mills from clearing off drilling locations.

To those of you who are starting to lose faith in Trumps' promise for lower gas prices, I can only say one thing. Hang on, it's coming. And, it looks like a big one.

Conclusion
Deferred gratification is a fundamental concept in sociology that highlights the importance of self-control, patience, and the ability to delay immediate rewards for long-term benefits. It has significant implications in understanding social behavior, economic inequality, intergenerational mobility, and consumer culture. By recognizing the value of delayed gratification, individuals can make more informed decisions and work towards achieving their long-term goals

longer term goals.

That’s nice. Maybe it’ll help for 2028. We definitely could use this before the midterms like a year ago.

I’m currently in the Delaware basin, straddling TX and NM.

We have six rigs running.

It’s also pouring rain to the point the 100 year arroyo has flowing water in it. Happy to be on a high point because we’re going to be here a while. I wondered why the rancher had us lay shallow rows of rocks pulled up from pipeline construction. I’m even a rancher and figured he was wasting his time, but it was cheaper for us than hauling them off. He’ll have a couple of sections (square miles) of shallow standing water that will sink in and give him a nice winter crop of volunteer hay.

You are aware of the disconnect between the price of oil (which is on the cheaper side when adjusted for inflation) and the price of fuel, right?

What is going on is a refinery issue. We have a refinery issue because leftists successfully blocked every new refinery since 1978.

That may be true. However, in 2025 gas was reasonable. And then in 2026, it changed drastically. Gas prices rose sharply in late February and March 2026 during Donald Trump’s second term, triggered by the U.S. conflict with Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Sadly, that is all for Haynesville Shale drilling (natural gas) and won’t affect gasoline prices. Much of it will go down to the Lake Charles area and be sold as LNG.

As far as the sweet gum, maybe they use it to build data centers. /s

When oil gets high priced and drilling ramps up it has an effect on various items in the lumber business.

Rig mats and Access mats are the most often direct effect.
I used to sell an Access Mat maker in Idaho. He shipped by rail car up to Edmonton. He bought 2x8 8’ & 14’ in Red oak, Douglas Fir and even Hem/Fir.

Access Mats are also known as Swamp mats. They are used to build a road into drilling cites where the heavy equipment would damage the environment or get stuck getting to the drilling site.

Right now a lot of the BC sawmills are making 2x8 rough sawn green Douglas Fir and Larch for access mats. They also really like making a product that stays in Canada. Due to the current Duties and tariffs to ship lumber to the US(45%).

I had another retail lumber customer in NW ND that would buy 3x12 #3 timbers. They got used in the Bakken Shale oil fields just to lay drilling pipe on. To get it off the ground. They didn’t use any access mats in ND because thew ground is so hard and frozen for months.

Sweetgum is not a very desirable species. It usually only gets used as the interior plies in Southern Plywood.

Yes, hundred dollar oil will do that for Texas.

You should see what $40.00 oil can do.

Oil and gas capex is driven by the price of oil.

Also, in much the same area refineries are receiving Venezula crude. That pressures the entire local industry.
