Rep. Ilhan Omar has retained Amy Jeffress, former personal attorney to President Joe Biden, to represent her in a federal investigation concerning her immigration history and financial disclosures. Joshua Matz, also from the same firm, will join her legal team.
This development follows renewed attention to a deleted 2013 social media post, which has raised questions about her family name. Omar has not been charged and denies any wrongdoing.
A seven-page letter to the Justice Department
On October 16, Jeffress and Matz sent a letter requesting the return of Omar’s passport, electronics, and other seized property, as well as preservation of all audio and video recordings from the search.
The attorneys stated that a magistrate judge established protocols to protect Omar’s interests as a member of Congress. They allege agents disregarded these rules and prevented Omar from contacting her counsel for over an hour.
Omar has requested financial support from her supporters, stating, “It is going to be a very expensive and challenging time and so we appreciate whether you’re able to send $5, $10, $20,” in a video message.
“That goes a long way as we fight Trump and his administration for trying to intimidate me and so many people right before the midterm elections,” she added. “We know that they’re running scared, we’re not going to be intimidated, we’re not going to be silenced, we’re not going to be scared.”
The 2013 Father’s Day post
In a June 2013 Father’s Day post, Omar thanked God for “my aabo Nur Said,” using the Somali word for father. She deleted the post on September 19, 2019. Previously, she had listed her father’s name as “Nur Omar Mohamed.”
