Super El Nino is ‘off the charts’ — and that could be oddly good for NYC, but spell trouble for other parts of US this winter (only 4.25 years left)

An off-the-charts Super El Niño that’s expected to peak this winter could be oddly good for New York City — while other parts of the US may be slammed by storms and flooding, forecasters said Thursday.

The “behemoth” weather system — measured by sea surface temperatures — could rise to more than six times that of a typical El Niño between November and January, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

“This is literally off the monitoring charts that we have used for the past four decades,” Celeste Saulo, secretary of the WMO, said Wednesday.

In the Big Apple, it could make weather feel like autumn into January — with up to a quarter less snow forecast this winter than last, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Matt Benz told The Post.

“Fall will linger longer this year,” Benz said. “We expect winter to arrive later.”

“In the middle to end of January, we will start to get taste of winter in the Tri-State area,” he said.

While a brutal 43 inches of snow fell last year in New York City, only 10 to 20 inches are forecast this year, he said.

Much of the Northeastern US is also expected to have a mild winter due to the weather system.

This is the best stretch of weather in the upper Midwest for October in many decades. Gonna hit 70° again today with another week to go.

In ancient Rome, soothsayers claimed to be able to read the future by cutting open animals on a ceremonial altar and examining their entrails. Cicero thought it a marvel that soothsayers could pass each other in the street without erupting in laughter. Meteorologists seem little different.

It says less snow, not less precipitation. Well still get rain.

Being a meteorologist these days means adding the word “super” in front of whatever the old phrase was for the weather event and then getting a worried look on your face and talking about how its going to kill people. Either that or being a hot woman and wearing skimpy clothes while you try to read the teleprompter.

Yes, but that not enough. What happened so far is that the upstream grounds are soaked and the smaller upstream dams are being filled right now.
When those are filled, Lake Powell will rise a lot more and then even Lake Mead.

It is a lot easier to send water down stream, than upstream, so they always try to fill the upstream first!

This El Nino is not so super when you look at the extent. Nino 1+2 (eastern Pacific) is significant (+4.5), but farther to the west, the Nino 3.4 index is (+2.5, average).
I disagree with this weather guy. Winter El Ninos can bring strong coastal snowstorms to the Mid-Atlantic and NE. In Feb. 2010, the southern jet connected with an arctic outbreak to bring snowmageddon. In Jan. 2016, another coastal snowstorm brought copious amounts snow up the east coast during an El Nino.
We’ve had three La Ninas in a row (2018-2025), which brought cold/dry weather to the east and lots of snow to the west. I think this El Nino will bring a couple of nor’easters with an abundance of snow in the east.

Yeah, all of this hyperventilating is an attempt to breathe life into the so-called climate crisis, which will go down in history as the greatest lie told by the scientific community. They should be ashamed for propagating politics masquerading as science but they are not.

Superstorm Sandy wasn’t so super, a category one hurricane that took on extra-tropical characteristics and brought high winds to the NE. Hurricane Hazel (1954) was worse. But that bear hug that Chris Christy gave to Obama the tyrant assured Obama’s re-election. And the government received “Sandy Supplemental” funds to waste on pork projects. What a colossal farce.

https://www.britannica.com/science/El-Nino

El Niño, in oceanography and climatology, the anomalous appearance, every few years, of unusually warm ocean conditions along the tropical west coast of South America. This event is associated with adverse effects on fishing, agriculture, and local weather from Ecuador to Chile and with far-field climatic anomalies in the equatorial Pacific and occasionally in Asia and North America as well.

.....

The term El Niño was originally used during the 19th century by the fishermen of northern Peru. For them, El Niño—in Spanish, el niño means “the little boy” and also, when capitalized, refers to the Christ Child—was a way to describe the annual flow of warm equatorial waters southward that reached its maximum in December, during the Christmas season. Peruvian scientists later noted that more intense changes occurred at intervals of several years and were associated with catastrophic seasonal flooding along the normally arid coast, while the thermal anomalies lasted for a year or more. The more unusual episodes gained world attention during the 20th century, and the original annual connotation of the name was replaced by that of the anomalous occurrence.

.....

Climate is often defined loosely as the average weather at a particular place, incorporating such features as temperature, precipitation, humidity, and windiness. A more specific definition would state that climate is the mean state and variability of these features over some extended time period. Both definitions acknowledge that the weather is always changing, owing to instabilities in the atmosphere. And as weather varies from day to day, so too does climate vary, from daily day-and-night cycles up to periods of geologic time hundreds of millions of years long. In a very real sense, climate variation is a redundant expression—climate is always varying. No two years are exactly alike, nor are any two decades, any two centuries, or any two millennia.
