Real footage, not pure rubbish — but the framing as a criminal “scheme” is spin.Podcasts.apple
The video attached to that post is authentic. It shows then-Congressman Keith Ellison (now Minnesota Attorney General) being interviewed by Somali media (associated with Mogadishu Times / similar outlets) around the time of his 2013 trip to Mogadishu. In it, he discusses efforts to keep remittances (money transfers) flowing from Somali-Americans in the US, especially Minnesota, to Somalia.YouTube
Key points he makes in his own words (from contemporaneous reporting and clips of the interview):
Banks were dropping out of facilitating US–Somalia transfers due to anti-money-laundering and terrorism-financing regulations.
He was working “on the Somali side of the equation to try to see what we could do to make sure that we move those transactions along.”
He sponsored the bipartisan Money Remittances Improvement Act (H.R. 4386, passed in 2014) to ease regulatory burdens on money service businesses so legitimate transfers wouldn’t be cut off.
He described remittances as a critical lifeline (often cited as a large share of Somalia’s GDP) supporting families, stability, and reducing the appeal of groups like al-Shabaab.Goodoil
This was public advocacy for legal, regulated diaspora remittances — something common for many immigrant communities and something Ellison framed as serving his Minnesota constituents (who have one of the largest Somali populations in the US) while supporting Somalia’s recovery. He also wrote publicly (including a New York Times op-ed) arguing against blocking these transfers.NYTimes
Why it’s being called a “scheme” now
The post’s framing ties this old interview to the later, well-documented large-scale fraud in Minnesota social-service programs (most notably Feeding Our Future, involving roughly $250 million in federal child-nutrition funds, plus other Medicaid and related frauds with estimates in the billions). Many of those cases involved members of the Somali community, with some proceeds allegedly remitted abroad via formal or informal channels (hawala networks). Critics highlight Ellison’s long advocacy for keeping the remittance pipeline open, plus a separate 2021 audio recording of him meeting with people later convicted in the Feeding Our Future case (where they complained of discrimination by state agencies, discussed political support, and he offered to help look into it; some donations followed and were later returned). Ellison has said he met them in good faith, was unaware of the fraud at the time, and took no improper action.Americanexperiment
The video itself does not show Ellison describing or admitting to any fraudulent scheme. It shows him talking about facilitating legal family remittances. Linking it to later fraud is an interpretive argument about priorities, oversight failures, and the scale of fraud that occurred under state Democratic leadership (including while he was AG), not a literal confession in the clip.
In short: the clip is real and the quotes are accurate. The “true story: Ellison describes the scheme” framing is partisan rhetoric that uses real statements in the context of proven later fraud scandals. Both the remittance advocacy and the fraud cases are extensively documented in public records, court filings, and reporting.
Lots of these assclowns should be done but.......crickets! There are two sets of rules. Guess which set we’re under. 😠
AG Keith Ellison is a Muslim.
He converted to Islam as a young man and was the first Muslim elected to the US Congress.
Now as AG, he’s the first Muslim elected to statewide office in Minnesota.
Wouldn't this be a federal crime? A lot of this fraud involved federal money.
Conservatives are no longer entitled to justice in this country.
The Republic has passed away.
The voters might.
But the vote counters won’t.
That’s the “Minnesota Way.”
