The Russian Revolution — commonly conceived of as the communist overthrow of the Romanovs — actually took place over the course of two steps.
First, Tsar Nicholas II abdicated in March 1917.
Then, that fall, Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks decapitated the left-wing government led by the Party of Socialist-Revolutionaries in what came to be known as the October Revolution.
That’s the one that was celebrated as a holiday in the Soviet Union, and is now by socialists everywhere.
Not the left’s triumph over the right, but the bloodthirsty left’s defeat of the far-left.
History is repeating itself in the Big Apple this October, as Mayor Zohran Mamdani takes hits from more than the usual suspects.
The revolution he represents has found a new counterrevolutionary subject of their ire: him.
Just last Wednesday, on the third anniversary of the Oct. 7 massacre in Israel, Mamdani did everything in his power to let the collection of antisemites, spoiled rich kids, Third World fetishists, and Islamists in his coalition whose side he’s really on.
His statement about the matter included only a passing mention of the day’s atrocities, carried out against Jews because they were Jews, before transitioning into a much more forceful, impassioned denunciation of the victims.
Later that evening, he dined at Ayat Hinds Hall on the Upper West Side, a Palestinian restaurant with a menu that denies the very existence of Israel and includes a section labeled “From the River to the Sea,” a common refrain used to call for the eradication of the world’s only Jewish state.

It’s always the counter revolution that ‘gits ya.
The bolsheviks had to eliminate the menshiveks.
The SS had to eliminate the SA
Castro had to eliminate his own revolutionaries.
To prevent a counter revolution.

Great article. I finally realized who the RINO Repubs in Congress remind me of. A weak and watered down version of Romanovs.

Goldstein had fled and was hiding no one knew where, and of the others, a few had simply disappeared, while the majority had been executed after spectacular public trials at which they made confession of their crimes. Among the last survivors were three men named Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford. It must have been in 1965 that these three had been arrested. As often happened, they had vanished for a year or more, so that one did not know whether they were alive or dead, and then had suddenly been brought forth to incriminate themselves in the usual way. They had confessed to intelligence with the enemy (at that date, too, the enemy was Eurasia), embezzlement of public funds, the murder of various trusted Party members, intrigues against the leadership of Big Brother which had started long before the Revolution happened, and acts of sabotage causing the death of hundreds of thousands of people. After confessing to these things they had been pardoned, reinstated in the Party, and given posts which were in fact sinecures but which sounded important. All three had written long, abject articles in the Times, analysing the reasons for their defection and promising to make amends.
Some time after their release Winston had actually seen all three of them in the Chestnut Tree Café. He remembered the sort of terrified fascination with which he had watched them out of the corner of his eye. They were men far older than himself, relics of the ancient world, almost the last great figures left over from the heroic days of the Party. The glamour of the underground struggle and the civil war still faintly clung to them. He had the feeling, though already at that time facts and dates were growing blurry, that he had known their names years earlier than he had known that of Big Brother. But also they were outlaws, enemies, untouchables, doomed with absolute certainty to extinction within a year or two. No one who had once fallen into the hands of the Thought Police ever escaped in the end. They were corpses waiting to be sent back to the grave.
All revolutions devour their children.
I’m sure the writer means well but he makes a hash of history.
It is the far left Totalitanists who replace the socialist left. Not the left replacing the far left.
Mamdami as he now tries to govern NYC cannot implement the far lefts communist dreams. That would take a revolution. I do think the time is right for the massive amounts of murder that will be needed to cement the victory.
A counter revolution is meant to reverse the revolution. The communist slaughter following a socialist takeover is not counter revolutionary. It is a deepening and hijacking of the revolution.
Trump is a counter revolution. Communist totalitarianism is a logical next step in a socialist revolution.
The danger we face with populism from the left and right is that it combines to force government power over people’s freedom. The difference being the Left becomes Totalitarian while the right becomes Authoritarian. This country will be for Authoritarian.
AI summary
Totalitarianism and authoritarianism are both systems of concentrated, undemocratic power, but totalitarianism seeks complete control over every aspect of public and private life, whereas authoritarianism focuses strictly on political control while leaving some social and economic life independent.
Core Differences
• Scope of Control:
• Totalitarianism: Demands total control over citizens’ thoughts, beliefs, daily actions, and private spheres using a secret police and mass surveillance.
• Authoritarianism: Demands blind political submission and obedience, but typically allows people to live their private lives, practice traditional religions, and manage separate social or business entities as long as they do not challenge the government.
• Guiding Ideology:
• Totalitarianism: Driven by a rigid, all-encompassing state ideology (such as fascism or Stalinism) that it forces the entire population to actively believe in.
• Authoritarianism: Usually lacks an elaborate state-imposed belief system; it is generally concerned with retaining raw political power and maintaining traditional hierarchies.
• Public Mobilization:
• Totalitarianism: Actively mobilizes the entire population through rallies, propaganda, and state organizations to relentlessly pursue grand national goals.
• Authoritarianism: Prefers political passivity rather than active mass enthusiasm, aiming for quiet obedience instead of genuine ideological devotion.
• Pluralism and Institutions:
• Totalitarianism: Suppresses or destroys all independent social organizations, churches, and pluralistic institutions.
• Authoritarianism: Tolerates a degree of social, economic, or corporate diversity and traditional institutions as long as they do not threaten the ruler.
• Historical Examples:
• Totalitarianism: Nazi Germany, Stalinist USSR, and North Korea.
• Authoritarianism: 20th-century military dictatorships in Latin America or various personalistic autocracies.
