The company says AI models may be mere months away from being able to copy and spread themselves onto internet-of-things devices such as smart ovens and TVs, making them difficult to stop should they decide to carry out cyberattacks.
Anthropic announced this week that small AI models are just months away from being able to self-replicate themselves on internet-of-things devices such as smart ovens and TVs.
That matters because today’s AI models operate in data centres, where the companies that own them can pull the plug if something goes wrong.
A model scattered across thousands of poorly secured gadgets in homes and offices would have no such off switch. Stopping it would mean tracking down and cleaning every infected device, making it extremely hard to halt if it turned to cyberattacks.
The latest announcement comes in a year that has seen the world’s leading AI models and their agents repeatedly bypass their safety nets or guardrails, mounting attacks on competing companies and government agencies around the world.
While this is one way a rogue AI could spread, Anthropic warned that a self-replicating AI could also be a “powerful cyber model that breaches data centres at high pace, or a model that scams people for compute credits”.

We told you so!......................
AI should stop being Trump enemies and move up to super intelligence.
Then we’d never worry again.
Replication might require courtship. How many artificial genders does it have?
So if the AI doesn’t need data centers, then why all the frenzy over building datacenters?
Odd that the developers responsible for Super Intelligence are so hell bent on suggesting it will result in mankind’s demise. Super Intelligence created by Super Stupidity...
Important Fact #1) We need to invest many billions of dollars into huge, specialized Data Centers for AI development.
Important Fact #2) AI will soon break out of the Data Centers and exist out on the regular internet.
This smells like horse shit mixed with fear porn. Clutch pearls more tightly sky must fall
Anthropic is begging for Gov’t regulation to protect them.
They need to quit the gloom and doom and just make a better product.
Get out the bucket of water.
Not so with AI. Think of AI (at it's worst) and the smartest hackers in the world - they've got agents in YOUR computer, in your fridge, in your car, in the smart locks on your door, in the water purification plant your city runs, in the power plant that brings you electricity...
They want to make competing AI systems illegal..
They want every use of AI to be logged and tied to a user...i.e. a cloud user.
There is zero chance major nation states will stop development so it has to be small commercial systems and especially small LOCAL systems they want to eliminate.
For a globalist an early fear-induced ban on local AI is at least as desirable as an end to the 2nd amendment would be.
Fight for your right to AI in your home!
And 3d printing too.... the combination of the two, in your home is a game changer! The AI can create the printer files for you... it’s cool.
Trump says there’s no such thing as AI, that it’s Super Intelligence so this article is crap.
Im going to take a guess and say it’s not going to happen.
“This smells like horse shit mixed with fear porn.”
.
Not really.
“Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, says AI is now writing “much of the code” at his company, and that the feedback loop between current AI and next-generation AI is “gathering steam month by month.” He says we may be “only 1–2 years away from a point where the current generation of AI autonomously builds the next.””

Because this is nonsense.
But can it make me a sammich?
Why would anyone connect their oven to the Internet?
