Ocean County's [NJ] entire fleet is from DJI, a Chinese manufacturer of drones. LEDA estimates that about 80% to 90% of law enforcement agencies flying drones use DJI devices. China controls a vast majority of the global drone market, and it's the dominant source for the minerals and raw materials needed to build them, researchers say.
The Trump administration wants that to end. It's made several moves to bolster U.S. drone makers, including by banning many new foreign-made drones from entering the American market. Most recently, his administration announced tariffs of 15% to 100% on some foreign-made drones, making it much more expensive for agencies to buy these devices.
Critics of these moves say the American drone industry is not yet able to keep up with demand, nor can it match the high-quality and low-cost drones made in China. Law enforcement agencies that rely on these drones are getting caught up in the fight as the federal government pushes back on the dominance of Chinese technology.
NPR compared the cost of two drones with similar features. The DJI Matrice 400 drone retails for about $10,500. The American-made Inspired Flight IF800 TOMCAT is going for $21,000.

Some how they did their job before drones so I think they’ll be okay for now.
A. This is good since its an absolutely terrible idea to rely on the Chicoms for drones...if we were to ever have a military conflict with them.
B. Maybe the police should lay off using drones. Too many asnd they might crash into all those camera posts.
Good!
Nice to know our God given freedoms are on a rebound, even if it’s a tiny step in the right direction.
Different departments could share a drone.
Used drones might be bought.
We have been talking about this fact for YEARS now. Has the U.S. opened up even 1 acre of Federal lands for rare earth prospecting yet??
Drones are a critical defense technology.
DJI has the ability to access all of the data that the drone acquires during operation. The Chinese are quite curious about everything. They have built in the ability to access the imagery captured by any of their products right off of your smartphone and probably with the right settings and permissions they can access other data outside their apps. It’s a nightmare for data security.
Ukraine makes drones.
Perhaps:
If we’d let you use our name in your ads, will you sell us a drone for $10K?
If NPR is upset about it, I’m upset about it.

China has a big chunk of the drone market because of democraps penchant for outsouring everything to foreigners. These drones collect data and provide regular software updates all connected to servers in China.
Being somewhat familiar with this due to it coming up on past projects I worked on, allowing Chinese tech is a bad idea. Their laws for espionage/intelligence are compulsory. So every company asked for data by the government has to hand it over immediately or else. At least the Russian laws has the government go through the motions of making a court filing where it will be almost alwasys be automatically approved.
Imagine all the trouble you could cause or all the intel you could collect and derive from China drones being used by your own government.
Still trying to figure out why heavy lift drones are needed for law enforcement. Are they dropping Barney Fife in the backyard or something?
AI Overview
Federal funds and agency budgets have been used to purchase Chinese-manufactured drones—primarily from DJI despite broader government security restrictions:
• US Secret Service Spent nearly $13,000 purchasing DJI Mavic 2 Pro & Phantom 4 drones.
• FBI Purchased 19 DJI drones costing nearly $60,000.
• US Dept of the Interior Historically maintained and operated a large fleet of roughly 800 DJI drones for firefighting, surveying, and search-and-rescue operations.
• US Air Force Procured, planned targeted purchase of DJI models (Mavic 2 Pro, Mini 3 Pro, Avata 2) including a solicitation by FE Warren AFB Wyoming—to serve as training and electronic warfare threat surrogates.
• State and Local Public Safety Agencies Continue to use federal pass-thru grants (eg Homeland Security Grant Program funds) to acquire DJI equipment, prompting ongoing legislative pushback and restrictions.
good. The Flock Drones are not good anyway, the only thing they do is protect Flock cameras.
DJI also makes about half of the agriculture drones sold in the US.
There are numerous US drone manufacturers that they could be using. Support domestic manufacturers. Screw the Chinese.
Android phones personal data collection can not be turned off even if the off switch is set to off. Google has to know what you are doing and buying s o they can send you personalized ads, just as the CCP collects that data also.
