Summary

Michael Matt’s The Remnant Underground reports on the 2026 Catholic Identity Conference (CIC) in Pittsburgh, which he describes as a major success in bringing together traditionally minded Catholics from groups that frequently disagree. He argues that the conference demonstrated that traditional Catholics can cooperate without abandoning their convictions or engaging in personal attacks.

1. Unity among traditional Catholics

The conference brought together representatives of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP), the Institute of Christ the King, independent traditionalists, diocesan Catholics, priests, bishops, religious sisters, and laypeople. Speakers included Bishop Athanasius Schneider, Bishop Rob Mutsaerts, Bishop David James Lippert, Vatican journalists Edward Pentin and Diane Montagna, and pro-life activist Abby Johnson.

Matt emphasizes that participants discussed contentious subjects—including relations with the Vatican, Pope Francis, and pro-life controversies—without demanding complete agreement. He attributes this to meeting face-to-face, practicing Christian charity, and prioritizing the search for truth over online factionalism.

2. Opposition to developments in the Vatican

Matt presents the conference as part of a broader effort to defend traditional Catholic teaching against what he considers modernist changes within the Church. He highlights Bishop Schneider’s warning that the Church faces a serious internal crisis, which Schneider characterizes as approaching apostasy.

The speakers addressed disagreements over the Second Vatican Council, religious pluralism, moral teaching, and the treatment of traditional Catholics. Matt questions whether recent Vatican statements and policies are consistent with earlier papal teachings, particularly concerning the relationship between Catholicism and other religions and the Church’s teaching on homosexual acts.

3. Defense of the Traditional Latin Mass

The central issue in the conference’s closing declaration is the preservation of the Traditional Latin Mass. Matt argues that it is not merely a matter of liturgical preference but a means of transmitting the historic Catholic faith to younger generations.

He calls on Pope Leo XIV to protect traditional liturgy and reconsider restrictions associated with Traditionis Custodes. He contends that traditional Catholics should remain within the Church while resisting policies they believe threaten their faith.

4. An appeal to Pope Leo XIV

Matt and conference co-founder Eric Frankovich issued an open letter to the Pope, inviting others to sign it voluntarily. The letter expresses loyalty to the papacy while warning that traditional Catholics may have to resist the Pope if they believe Church teaching and tradition are being compromised. It invokes St. Paul’s correction of St. Peter, St. Athanasius, and St. Catherine of Siena as historical precedents for respectfully challenging ecclesiastical authority.

The letter also asks for clarification of apparent tensions between traditional Catholic doctrine and more recent Vatican statements and practices. Its authors insist they do not intend to undermine the papacy but want the Pope to defend the Church’s inherited faith.

5. Future plans

Matt announces that all conference talks will be released free online, following the success of a free livestream supported by voluntary donations. He encourages viewers to share the material and contribute financially toward preparations for the 2027 conference, planned for Pittsburgh in early October.

Overall: Matt portrays the conference as evidence that traditional Catholics can unite across organizational divisions while maintaining their disagreements. His broader objective is to build a coordinated movement that defends the Traditional Latin Mass, challenges Vatican policies it considers incompatible with Catholic tradition, and remains committed to the Catholic Church rather than separating from it.

Ecumenical. The path forward! One mass to rule them all. Other denominations may not like Latin. One mass to find them. Bring all denominations together under Catholic rule.

Compulsory? Well, no . . . not at first. BUT if an unfortunate global event were to occur threatening mankind, we’ll remember Covid? People were required to get the clot shot or be fired. Remember the teenager out in the Pacific on a boogie board with nobody in sight? Arrested for disobeying lock down from King Newsome.
So you never know what you will be required to do for betterment of mankind, the Constitution be damned. A one world government needs a one world religion to control the people.

Latin, who cares, it’s not the Bible.

As a former altar boy who got a lot out of the Latin Mass, I think the Church lost something when the Mass moved to English.

To maintain a link to Catholicism's centuries of history, it's well worth allowing Latin Masses to continue for those who prefer that language.  Why is one human language singled out as being condemned by a pope?

Something is not right.  If Leo plays hardball on this issue, he may provoke a Great Schism.

Agreed, it’s not the Bible. But it has a pleasant almost poetic expression. I’m not Catholic and I’m sure I wouldn’t like it on a weekly basis because it’d be too distracting if you’re listening for a message. To me it’d be like going to church to see a play or listen to the choir if that’s the reason one goes to church.

Too much pride on both sides.

How about we trust Jesus in prayer and fasting and eorks of mercy, rather than fighting for Him or His church? Surrender this fight to Christ because we have not the power to outvote the pope or cardinals. Resign, pray and fast and work works of mercy from within. Trust Mary to untie the knot. Trust Jesus as King and Omnipotent.

He permits the devil’s successful attack....to reveal to us to strengthen our faith in Him. But we are failing here, fighting like Martha, not trusting like Mary.

I love a good fight, hardly need to be asked. Jesus is not calling me to fight this time like this; satan is.

Better yet — switch to Biblical Christianity and avoid competing religions.

The New Testament is in Greek, but it has some transliterated Latin words: “census” (for the tax paid to Caesar) (Mark 12:14), “denarius” (Matt. 20:2, Luke 20:24), “praetorium” (John 18:28), and the inscription on the cross was in Hebrew, Latin (Rhomaisti) and Greek (John 19:20).
