After years of uncertainty, delays, and preparations, we finally have a timeline for when the historic SS United States will be sent to the bottom of the Gulf.
Late on Friday night, October 9, 2026, officials in Okaloosa County, Florida, announced that the legendary ocean liner is scheduled to be deployed as the world’s largest artificial reef during the second week of November 2026.
The ship will be sunk approximately 22 nautical miles, or 25 miles, southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
While an exact date has not been announced, county officials say the operation will be weather-dependent, meaning the timeline could change.
This is a massive milestone for a ship that spent nearly three decades sitting along Philadelphia’s Delaware River waterfront.

The timing of the announcement was unusual, arriving in a press release Friday evening as Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin as a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph.
Tomecek said the timing was purely coincidental.
SS United States to leave Mobile in November for final voyage and Gulf reef deployment
Some libs will get a judge to stop it......

My family sailed to Germany on that ship when I was a toddler.

It is very interesting 🤔
Wow!
That area is getting quite a collection of artificial reefs.
There’s an aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Oriskany (AKA “the great carrier reef”) about 23 miles SE of Pensacola Pass. She sits so tall the top of the island is only in 85 feet of water but the sea floor is at 220 feet. She’s currently the longest ship ever sunk to make a reef, 911 feet.
The Empire Mica sits in 110 feet of water about 20 (statute) miles south of Port St Joe. She also was deliberately sunk but by a U-boat. And what with Nazis being Nazis n’all, they didn’t care whether it made for a good dive site.
And there’s a tug boat and several old coal barges on that stretch of the coast.
Believe it or not I found a site advertising dive trips on the USS United States, even though she’s not yet sunk. It states her main deck will be in 55-60 feet of water, which makes her accessible to garden variety sport divers.
Heck, I’ve seen snorkelers get deeper than that.
She is the largest ocean liner to be entirely constructed in the United States and the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic Ocean in either direction, earning the Blue Riband for the highest average speed since her maiden voyage in 1952, a title that remains uncontested.
Unfortunately, she was built on the cusp of the age of jet travel.
Now you will be able to fish from above or dive down to it.
Sad. Beautiful ship in the day.
Off topic, but where exactly did Isaias make landfall? Everything I’ve read says “near Destin”. As someone who visits the area annually, I’m very interested in the specifics. Was it east of you, dead on, or west of you?
I find it kind of sad that such should be completely wasted.
Hopefully they salvaged every item that could possibly be used or repurposed by anyone for anything, and the empty hull calculated to not even be scrap worthy.
Miramar.......
Thank you! I take it that your power is back on?
