Michigan Senate hopeful El-Sayed calls himself a ‘physician’ but has little history treating patients

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed for years has publicly said he’s a physician — but there’s overwhelming evidence that he’s had no experience as a licensed medical doctor.

This April, he gave an interview to a local TV journalist where he talked up his credentials as a physician multiple times. In March, he told a group of Teamsters nurses that he had “been in enough codes to watch who really does the work” and said that same month on a podcast that “I’ve been a doctor my whole career.”

His LinkedIn profile currently says he’s a “physician,” and late last month he called himself “a physician and epidemiologist” at a Council of Baptist Pastors debate in Detroit.

But according to a review of Michigan and New York state medical records, he’s never been granted a medical license in those states. El-Sayed’s hands-on experience treating patients appears to be a short clinical rotation called a sub-internship at a small hospital in Manhattan for four weeks at the end of medical school, he told a podcast in 2022, where he said his “job was to be the, like, worst doctor on the team” and he was “cosplaying a doctor.”

“The perception in Michigan is that he is, at least at one point in his life, a licensed physician,” said Chris Dewitt, an unaligned Democratic strategist based in Michigan. “That apparently is not the case, and it blows up a big part of his campaign.”

There’s no doubt that El-Sayed has top-notch medical credentials. He attended the University of Michigan Medical School and ended up receiving his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has a doctorate in public health from Oxford University and worked as an assistant professor of epidemiology at Columbia for a year before moving...

“He has earned the right to be called ‘doctor’ twice over,” El-Sayed spokesperson Roxie Richner said in a statement. Richner didn’t respond to questions about his use of the word “physician.” El-Sayed has said in the past that he decided not to practice medicine after treating a patient during medical school and decided he wanted to address systemic issues, instead of individual patients.

From May. Could be another nazi for all we know. Big Media still has time to ask a few questions. Info on the socialist bartender's ketamine addiction would help out also.

If he invested all that time and money on a medical career, why did he end up working animal control, putting hundreds of ‘blobs’ that were puppies and kittens to death?

True that about the hyped up moron AOC and ketamine.

This el-sayed has NO history treating patients (except in academic study groups perhaps but none personally). The reason? He never completed a medical residency and thus is NOT a licensed physician. It would be and is illegal for him to treaty anyone...in the USA and the civilized world of Europe such as it is.

He is a fraud saying he is a physician— he is not licensed and thus not a practitioner. He should also NOT be allowed to be a “senator” but that’s a horse’s a@@ of a different color.

El-Sayed is an epidemiologist, but is not licensed to treat patients as a physician. He has had an apparently distinguished career in public health, backed by an impressive education.

However, he is a muslim and a “Noo” Socialist! So he’s dangerous and must be voted down!

He probably didn’t even play doctor as a kid. Not with girls, anyway.

No. El-Sayed is an execution facility doctor. That is what he did for Michigan. He ran the animal shelter, where he euthanized whatever came through the front door. Then straight to the landfill.

And what is it with Islamists running for office that makes them full grin smile at every moment, even when it's not called for? It's so staged.

He’s a total fraud b/c Abdul El-Sayed is NOT licensed as a physician
and has NEVER held a state medical license to practice clinical medicine.

Educational Background
• Medical Degree: He earned a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Columbia University in 2014.
• Public Health Doctorate: He earned a doctor of philosophy (DPhil) in public health from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar in 2011.
• Residency: He did not complete a medical residency or clinical board exams required for independent patient care.

Licensing and Legal Status
• State Records: Reviews of medical board records in Michigan and New York confirm he has never held a medical license in either state.
• Legal Definitions: State laws in Michigan and New York restrict the title “physician” or related claims to individuals who hold active state licenses to practice medicine.

Campaign Scrutiny and Responses
As reported by Politico, critics and political rivals have questioned his use of the term “physician” in public profiles and campaign materials, noting he lacks clinical practice experience.

El-Sayed and his campaign have stated that he earned the title by graduating with an M.D., but chose to focus his career on public health policy and administration—such as serving as health director for Detroit and Wayne County—rather than treating individual patients.
