Miss Wisconsin puts agriculture literacy at forefront

Miss Wisconsin is putting agriculture literacy at the forefront.

Olivia Lulich made agricultural literacy a central part of her platform.

She uses social media to reach the next generation who will help feed, clothe and fuel the world. The Viroqua-area schools agriculture teacher and FFA advisor has an initiative called "One to 100."

It showcases how one percent of the population feeds 100 percent of our world.

"I think so many of our society and generation cares about what's in our food and how it is getting to our tables at the end of the day and the best way to ask that is to ask the source, asks the farmers, ask the producers and really find a way to combat those misconceptions." Lulich said.

Lulich also travels across Wisconsin to local farms for her AG fact Friday video vlogs. In those, she addresses misinformation about the AG industry and helps people understand where their food comes from.

She said her videos on agriculture have reached more than 1 million viewers in recent years.

Definitely would have signed up for Vo-Ag/FFA in high school if she would be the teacher…

Dangerous combination - smart and pretty! She’ll go far having won the Genetics Lottery. ;)

We have two girls in our immediate family that are Pageant Queens. One is currently a Miss Junior Wisconsin (where our current Miss Wisconsin came from) and her sister has three different crowns, but I forget the titles.

I’m not sure if they’re going to go further, though their Mother was a Pageant Queen and a ‘Kids From Wisconsin’ singer, so they may be doomed, LOL! (Their parents met and fell in love on the performing circuit.)

I saw her last weekend and I asked: Yes, you DO get to keep the crowns!

Every time Beau sees their brother he asks, ‘Both of your sisters are Beauty Queens...what happened to YOU?’ LOL!

(Brother is a looker, too!)

What? No burqa? You let a GIRL get educated? What’s the matter with Wisconsin?

Seriously, this is fantastic. I remember watching an ag girl on a huge wheat farm discussing her family farm operation from the cab of tractors and combines. It was great.

One of my personal ‘Female Ag Heroes’ is Sarah Frey. Talk about a Rags to Riches story!

Great bio of Sarah Frey. I’d never heard of her — what an inspirational story.

I was very sorry to read at the end that she is divorced — I was hoping for a fairy-tale marriage after that rough childhood. Still, what a good businesswoman! From 80 acres to 15,000 in seven states and biggest pumpkin producer in the USA. Wow. She’s a real testament to the American Dream, isn’t she?

Yes, I had an ag teacher. His name was Mr. Webb. Everyone admired him respected him. Years after he passed I learned that he was in some of fiercest battles in Pacific Theater. He was a fine Christian man.

Individuals and the larger world as a whole continue to suffer greatly because of agricultural ignorance.

Depending on schools to teach about how food gets to the table was the first problem.

She supplies a LOT of Walmarts with Pumpkins each fall. If I remember from her book, she married VERY young and her husband was less than ambitious.

I can relate. After a while we get tired of dragging them along with us, LOL!

"Individuals and the larger world as a whole continue to suffer greatly because of agricultural ignorance."

Indeed. I've lived pretty much adjacent to farmland in upstate New York, in Missouri, in California, and now in Idaho. My mom came from a timber and farm family. My fraternity at the University of Missouri had several young men from farm. I've always had huge respect and admiration for the people who toil to put food on our table. The incredible thing is that only 1% of Americans are involved in farming today. To illustrate your point about farm and ag ignorance: * Michael Bloomberg (former NYC mayor) in a 2016 talk at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School: “I could teach anybody, even people in this room, no offense intended, to be a farmer. It’s a process. You dig a hole, you put a seed in, you put dirt on top, add water, up comes the corn. You could learn that.” * Chris Jones, the 2026 Democratic candidate for Iowa Secretary of Agriculture. In a 2021 video that resurfaced during the campaign, he said of grain farming: “A lot of this grain farming now, it’s not that hard. They’re only working a few weeks out of the year,” and described many farmers as wealthy millionaires making several times the average Iowan’s income. * President Dwight Eisenhower said it best: “Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil and you’re a thousand miles from the corn field.”
