Schumer tanks popular insider trading ban in Dem effort to derail Republican's agenda ahead of midterms
Fox News ^ | 9/30/26 | Alex Miller, Elizabeth Elkind

Senate Democrats shut down Republicans’ bid to deal with two key issues for voters heading into the midterms.

Republicans tried and failed to pass a bill that would marry differing policy issues: banning lawmakers from using their insider knowledge to trade stocks and implementing voter ID policy nationwide — the latter of which the GOP has so far failed to accomplish with their SAVE America Act.

The Stop Insider Trading Act cruised through the House earlier this month, where a majority of House Democrats voted against it. Though voters are highly supportive of both, Democrats in the House and Senate argued that the stock trade ban wasn’t strong enough, while the voter ID element was too aggressive.

But the efforts to shut down the votes appear to build on a growing trend ahead of the November midterms — Democrats don't want to hand Republicans two massive wins going into a must-win election for both parties.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., argued that Republicans knew the bill would never pass, and that they "designed it that way."

"They don't want this bill to become law," Schumer insisted. "So they put a poison pill in that they knew would tank it."

"It's really trickery. Skullduggery," he added. "If Republican senators really cared about stopping stock trading by members, they wouldn't have loaded it up with a poison pill voter ID bill, which Senate Democrats have defeated already twice."

They are two issues, though worlds apart, that have routinely failed to launch in Congress.

Senate Democrats have blocked voter ID and the SAVE America Act — and its several iterations throughout the year — multiple times, while banning lawmakers from trading stocks has largely been stifled by intraparty quarrels on both sides of the aisle.

The DNC's Hamas wing will never be known for skullduggery. Not even a little bit.

There is no clearer message than that. The Democrats are hell bent on destroying America. GET OUT AND VOTE FOR EVERY REPUBLICAN! It’s up to the people to save America, if those bastards wont do it. Let’s not leave our President and America down ,like we did in 2018.

I will gladly hoist a glass on the day that Chuck Schumer dies.

The man is an absolute waste of humanity.

It would be swell if, one day, the Republicans were to control our Legislative Branch. But for now, the Democrats have all the power, and Republicans can’t do a darn thing.

Democrats have all the power, and Republicans can’t do a darn thing.

The Dems seem to manage with slim majorities… and often slim minorities!

Democrats have all the power, and Republicans WON’T do a darn thing.

Voter ID law is probably more popular than “insider trading ban” law so it’s hardly a “poison pill”

If Vicky Schumer is the leader of the minority, HTF do the bills not get passed?

Your analysis is wrong, bot.

Republicans in the Senate did not want the No Investments for Congressmen Bill to pass. That's why they paired it with the Voter ID Act, which they knew Democrats would vote against it unanimously (Uniparty in action). Thune is a scumbag and many FReepers know this.

I'll alway help to lead the bots and the blind through these difficult times.

In fairness to Schumer, the voter ID is a poison pill for him. But it’s about time people started recognizing the difference between *NEWS* (even less than stellar news like Fox News) and the BS advocacy of just about every other “news” source. There it is - right there in the second sentence: “...and implementing voter ID policy nationwide.” If this were a bill that Republicans killed because of a Democrat poison pill, that same information would be in paragraph 12, below the fold, after trashing the Republicans for 11 paragraphs for killing such a wonderful bill. So trash on Fox News - I don’t like their work a lot of the time - but they *ARE* still news and the within cable/broadcast almost all others no longer are. And certainly not Reuterss/AP/...

“...Democrats have all the power, and Republicans can’t do a darn thing.”

And the GOPe pukes are out there telling everybody to ‘vote, vote, and vote’ and some of us are asking why? Do you want to die in quicksand that takes you quickly or the tortuous, agonizing slow route?

But hey, they managed to lift the debt ceiling and put on a couple $trillion more in debt. Glad to see a few RINOs knocked out in the primaries though, gives some hope.

It’s a poison pill for Democrats. Given your nom de plume, I assume you’ve met a few?

And if they’d passed this bill without voter ID you’d be screaming that they are wasting their time with less important legislation instead of focusing on voter fraud. I know I’ve heard it plenty around here.

Damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

Sounds more to me like *you’re* part of the UniParty of your own. We all hear from lots of you.

So, there’s this thing called the Senate. And they have this thing called the filibuster. Perhaps you’ve heard of it?

That’s right - knocking the RINOs out - a few at a time. We’re replacing Tillis with a RINO, but it’s not Tillis - it’s an improvement. And a few RINOs did get replaced with something approximating real Republicans. It’s in the right direction. That’s all we need. To keep moving in the right direction.

So get out and vote!!!

Sorry - you’re calling LibLoather a bot?

Libloather is total bot. I have all the evidence and his posting history to prove it.

Despite that, my analysis of the Senate proceedings are dead-on correct. Thune is the real villain here.

Thune didn't attempt to pass a stand-alone bill for the No Investments for Congress Act (which passed in the House) because he didn't want it to succeed.

The filibuster is not mentioned in the Constitution. It is a Senate rule, and nothing more.

The majority party gets to make the Senate’s rules. If the Democrats win back the Senate, they’d probably eliminate the filibuster (if it would suit them to do so). Then we’d see attempts to pack the Supreme Court, etc.

Today’s Democrats have fire in the belly. Today’s Republicans, not so much.
