If anyone needs another reason not to buy a smart appliance, Samsung just pushed a toxic update to their smart fridge systems and bricked them all.

Affected fridges ‘suddenly lost power and stopped functioning immediately after' trying to issue a firmware update through SmartThings, Samsung's smart home platform. The SmartThings app then showed the devices as offline. Some users said that their fridge's internal display was stuck showing the message ‘Checking SmartThings app during update.'
Without refrigeration, the customers' food spoiled.
As a silver lining, the problem seems to be limited to South Korea.

The problem was exacerbated by the fact that the fridges all went down in the middle of Chuseok, the Korean harvest holiday.
Many customers are getting notices that Samsung won't be able to fix their fridges until mid-October, which should be ample time to find a dumb, mechanical refrigerator to replace those over-priced, big-brotheresque surveillance boxes.

I AM STILL USING A WESTINGHOUSE REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER I BOUGHT IN NOV 1965 FOR ABOUT $250.
HAVE MOVED IT 6/7 TIMES. WORKS JUST FINE.
NEPHEW VISITED LAST SUMMER& HE COMMENTED ON MY HAVING 2 UPRIGHT FREEZERS——(1972 & 2008) AND BEING SINGLE-—BUT I DO LIVE RURAL.
WHEN I TOLD HIM THIS WESTINGHOUSE UNIT WAS OLDER THAN HE WAS-—HE WAS VERY QUIET.
I have an LG refrigerator that I had hooked up to WiFi because it gives alerts if something is amiss, like the door staying open too long. BUT, I noticed food started thawing in the freezer and discovered that WiFi somehow was changing the temperature, no doubt to “save” energy somewhere along the way. Once I cut that invisible cord, my fridge, thankfully, has been running smoothly.

I have an LG TV that the company bricked after I owned it for 5 years. I won’t sign their new user agreement for data collection. I disconnected it from the internet.
I can use the TV as a monitor which I am doing using an old computer.
I’ll never buy LG again.

I have a Samsung double door fridge that was in the house when I bought it. Any time the power burps it goes into display mode..... lights work, but no refrigeration. I lost. a fridge full of food before I discovered that little quirk, and now I am an expert at resetting the thing. (press the blank space where the top buttons on each side of the screen should be for 10 seconds)

I love all the technology in my vehicles but some stuff just doesn’t need it. Like refrigerators, washing machines and toasters.

We didn’t have the manual, but we found it online. The problem was figuring out exactly WHERE those buttons are supposed to be! It’s not exactly at the top, it’s about 2 inches down. Mr G was out of town and I was yelling at him on the phone as if it was his fault while holding my thumbs over different spots on a blank panel for at least 10 seconds each time.

Why do appliance issues always happen when he’s out of town?
I just bought a TV soundbar.
it came with a remote with like 50 buttons on it.
it adjusts everything but ONE feature, the auto-off function.
it is factory set at something like 5 mins if the tv is paused.
VERY annoying
in order to adjust that one feature i have to download and install a app on my phone, TURN ON LOCATION SERVICES etc all for a freaking SPEAKER not to shut off.
like that wasn’t all intentional to get my info...

The words “software” and “fridge” shouldn’t be in the same sentence.
I want my old super dumb fridge back where I can turn a little wheel toward “colder” or “warmer”. A digital dashboard with a ridiculous menu is not necessary. (And it isn’t even a “smart” one.)

The guy who did maintenance on our JennAir said the exact same thing. We hate our JennAir — built by Whirlpool — but it came with the house.
We thought it was weird when the installers of our Sleep Number bed asked for our wifi password. Of course, they didn’t get it.
My sister had a Bosch laundry washer-dryer. It was terrible!! And that was before “smart” anything.

I’ll never get the hours back that I spent tweaking the USB flash drive to work well in the Toyota sound system. Many pages in the manual, but user posts online were the most help. I’d like to add more songs to the 1,000 already on the drive, but I’m afraid that if I remove it I’ll jinx it. One thousand is enough.
I’ve read that the manufacturers are aware that customers feel more comfortable with the old-fashioned knobs and dials than the digital. So they’ve been faking out buyers by eliminating the touch pads, keeping the digital, but disguising digital by “hiding” it under placebo-like knobs.

When plugged in, our toaster power button blinks constantly. I HATE that, so it’s unplugged most of the time. Arrrrgh!!
I miss the old CD players, when I could burn blank CD’s with my favorite music, and just pop then into the car’s CD player. Since I do many long drives anymore, I will experiment with installing a MP3 player app on my smart phone and try to play on Toyota sound system through blue tooth connection. Mp3 players such as MusicBee are very good at playing music one mp3 file after another automatically.
