If anyone needs another reason not to buy a smart appliance, Samsung just pushed a toxic update to their smart fridge systems and bricked them all.

Affected fridges ‘suddenly lost power and stopped functioning immediately after' trying to issue a firmware update through SmartThings, Samsung's smart home platform. The SmartThings app then showed the devices as offline. Some users said that their fridge's internal display was stuck showing the message ‘Checking SmartThings app during update.'
Without refrigeration, the customers' food spoiled.
As a silver lining, the problem seems to be limited to South Korea.

The problem was exacerbated by the fact that the fridges all went down in the middle of Chuseok, the Korean harvest holiday.
Many customers are getting notices that Samsung won't be able to fix their fridges until mid-October, which should be ample time to find a dumb, mechanical refrigerator to replace those over-priced, big-brotheresque surveillance boxes.

A few years ago, I was going to buy one of these. I thought my wife would really like it, but when she saw the cost, she said no way.
They have dishwashers that have this and have to be setup on bluetooth or they will not work. Why?

I saw a Bosch dishwasher which had only basic operation without an internet connection, but if you wanted to do something like a rinse only run you had to go through the app.

I had them and they’re ok. Maybe phones are less complex or fragile so they can make it.

Had a Samsung refrigerator for about 15 years. It was nice when we first got it home, but it was steadily downhill after that. Earlier this year it completely quit working. One icemaker quit after about five years. Second one quit a few years later. Automatic defrost quit after five or six years too. We had to remove all the shelves and pull the back panel off the interior every year and thaw the block of ice that collected on the evaporator with a hot-air gun. That was an all-day procedure. It was a terrible purchase.
Got a GE to replace it. Seems to be OK, but it’s still pretty new.
Bought a used Whirlpool set off of CL in 2013 when I moved in. They were both circa 1980s, sold by a fixer-upper guy who had refurbished them. $120 each. They’re both Still working 13 years later. The dryer has needed 2 new heating elements. Amazon for the $20 part, YT and a 10mm socket did the trick.
People can’t just open the door and check the food themselves?
We had two Fisher Paykel washing machines. The board on the first one died after six years. The dealer said it was a fluke. So, we bought another one. The board again died after six years.
So, we bought a Speed Queen. The model with a dial and buttons. No board. The only thing I had to fix on that was by passing the lid lock. It is a common problem. There are several YouTube videos on how to bypass it. Now, they make one with no lid lock so you can open it anytime in the wash cycle.
We also have a Speed Queen dryer. It has a dial to change the cycles. An on/off button and a high/med/low heat switch.
Again, NO F’N Computer board.
I have a Kenmore French door fridge/freezer. It was made by Whirlpool/Maytag/Amana/Kitchen Aid in Iowa. The important thing is that there is no ice maker through the door. You have to open the freezer door to get the ice out of the tray. It is about 13-14 years old now. No issues at all.
We bought a Kitchen Aid dishwasher at the same time. A couple of the wheels on the bottom rack broke. I replaced them with Stainless steel nuts and bolts. No other issues in 13 years.
We have two GE electric wall ovens. I replaced the heating element in the top one about ten years ago. It was $19 off the internet. I think they are from the 90s. The bottom one only gets used on holidays.
I have a GE electric glass top range. I had to replace one of the burners two years ago. $140 part off the internet. It took about an hour to replace. Again, I think it is from the 1990s.
I just had to replace my Insinkerator garbage disposal. The previous one was there when we bought the house 15 years ago.
I watched two YouTube videos. Convinced me to buy the 1/2 HP one for $199 at Home Depot. It took me about an 1 1/2 hours to install the new one. I had plumbers putty and teflon tape and paste already.
LG had a issue with their LINEAR COMPRESSORS.
They all died after a couple years or less.
I think there was a Class Action Lawsuit against them.

Oh my new Toyota must be very smart. The manual is 700 pages! So many options and customizations!!
It is running fine, I will bypass all firmware updates, unless dealer does it during free oil change.

our old Kenmore washer and dryer of about that same age are still going strong too, though i did have to make major repairs to each myself:
i replaced the MoBo on the dryer due to bad chinese capacitors, the same caps that entered into USA electronics at the time by the billions, including a whole generation of HP PCs ...
in the case of the dryer, a little online business would swap the old MoBo with a refurbed one that had been re-capped with good caps for a very reasonable fee ...
the washer uses a six-solenoid flow-control assembly that had gone bad, and i replaced it with a new one that cost $125.00 ...
