Make it so you can post stories like every other site on the Internet. There’s too many rules in posting.
That’s every site. Except maybe blue sky. They all have the same opinion.
I like that there’s a degree of difficulty to post an article here. It filters out a lot of low effort posting. The current smart phone era shows what happens when it’s easier for more people to post anything they want at any time.
Then you remember when it was just a message-board. Jim saw what it could be, and had to move off yahoo or whatever. Great times!
Rush was reading Free Republic every day for show prep during the Clinton/Lewinsky era. And still, here we are.
I'm a tad confused how the site hasn't been upgraded for over twenty years. The last upgrade I saw was over 20 years ago which introduced 'private' FReepmail. Which is completely not private since the Mods can see it all.
Maybe the kids will do some upgrades? Three hundred and twenty thousand a year is pretty good vigorish. Even in Fresno.
That's another thing that has gone 180 on this site. Zotting. Trolls getting the Zot used to be a full contact sport. A troll getting the zot would be like red meat to a wolf with FReepers piling on with "Well Bye" comments.
Now? Now if Bikurri tries pinging his Zot list - his posts get deleted.
A famous and well known FReeper did just that a few weeks ago. His thread got pulled and he was insulted by the moderator. For no reason.
That FReeper has not been back.

The best way to help revitalize the site is to go out and find news to post about. Try searching for news about various countries and post what could be relevant to economic or national security. Write an article about a historical event that you have an interest in. Find or write articles to post on science or engineering and get a discussion going.
This. All of this. The forum is open to posters, meaning no one can complain about not finding enough to comment on.

Kathy in Alaska and fatima post the favorite songs threads.
SunkenCiv posts the gods, graves, and glyphs threads (among others).

Free Republic doesn't need "modernizing", it needs a survey to find what some Freepers think is missing.
I appreciate the military and aviation threads, as well as the opposition to wokeness and misandry.
The movie threads are thin because Hollywood is dying, and Alec Baldwin hasn't shot anyone in a while.

We have no exposure or callouts from other conservative platforms, to the best of my knowledge. Even that imbecile Hannity would bring up FR sometimes. Conservative sites and commentators used to be something of a fraternity, albeit a loose one. Now? Not so much. Now they are throwing shade over each other in a desperate grab for ears and eyeballs.
We have a generational problem too. FR really is literally dying out and no fresh blood is coming in because of that lack of profile and the very aged clunkiness of the site itself. Yes, we older folk are fine with it (sort of), but the Zoomers not so much. They like their 'pop' and features and other bells and whistles.
As an aside, I have wondered for years where the money went to run this place, because it cannot possibly cost that much...even in Kalifornia. But I'll leave it at that before I attract unwanted attention.

This is an absolute truth. How can we make it better? Will the new owners listen? Jim was adamant publicly and privately for decades that he would not change a thing.
Now FR needs $20+k/month. All from donations. $360k/year is what the homepage says here.

The math does not add up. The homepage has not been updated in many, many years. It says you can still call and leave a message to Jim at (559) 273-1400. According to the homepage.
I hope the boys don't just sit and ride the wave of what their father built. I don't know them and will not judge. I will say that $20-30k/month is a nice cushion.

We get maybe 25% of current stories of interest posted here now
I see stuff on Benny or liberty daily or Breitbart or citizen free press or daily signal
I look for it here to be discussed
Maybe 25% hit here at most
We used to have folks posted news all day
