California’s growing number of wild wolves killed or injured dozens of farm animals across the state in 2026, so far, according to the latest report from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The CDFW updated its Wolf-livestock Depredation Investigations and Determinations report on Sept. 21. Of the 137 livestock depredation investigations performed this year, CDFW officials determined that 68 were wolf-related.
“The goal of LDIs is to determine the cause of the animal’s injury or death,” the CDFW said. “LDIs involve assessment of physical and circumstantial evidence. Trained investigators examine the carcass or injured animal and search for signs of an attack (e.g., premortem bites and tissue hemorrhage, evidence of a chase and struggle, etc.), as well as conditions potentially unrelated to predation, such as disease or prior injury.”
Cows and calves represented an overwhelming majority of the livestock killed or injured by wolves across California. However, the report also recorded wolf attacks that involved four alpacas, one horse, and seven lambs or sheep.

wolves are killers...and introducing them again again makes no sense. This is no longer a wild country in many areas.
We eradicated these killers from most of the lower 48 by the 1930s. Some remained in Minnesota.
They made a comeback due to the National Park Service and do-goody environmentalists.
Introducing wild wolves into Idaho in the 1990s, they spread rapidly onward into Washington and Oregon and have now reached Northern California. That’s just so special!
I can’t wait until they appear in San Fransico, Berkeley and Los Angeles! Maybe they’ll handle that growing homeless problem Newscum has?

Meanwhile, the white tail deer population has exploded. The deer annually destroy billions of $$$ of gardens and yards.

Wolves were everywhere there was prey.
The deer were pervasive over the east and so were the wolves. They were wherever there were adequate deer to support a wolf population.
Recently, I learned that the western mountain lions were once again present in North Eastern states.
It seems single males had migrated across Minnesota, crossing above the Mississippi river and heading east. They found rich hunting with lots of deer. The population has not swelled. It seems the young females prefer to stay put and not venture alone into unknown territory.
