Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken is pushing back against accusations that she called her chief of staff a “dirty Mexican,” issuing her first direct denial as the controversy threatens to engulf City Hall.
Aitken released the statement Thursday after her chief of staff, Berenice Ballinas, made the damning allegations that also claimed the mayor questioned the staffer’s sexuality during a trip to Disneyland.
“These allegations are extremely serious, and they deserve to be investigated. I did not use the racial slur attributed to me, and I have always been a champion of the LGBTQ community,” Aitken, a Democrat, said in her statement posted to Facebook.
The mayor had previously kept her comments brief, saying an ongoing personnel matter limited what she could publicly reveal.
“Berenice remains a City employee, and because this involves an ongoing personnel matter, there are strict limits on what I can responsibly discuss publicly,” Aitken added in her Thursday remarks.
“I will not violate her privacy or attack an employee who has recently experienced a serious medical issue simply to defend myself in the press.
“I welcome an investigation and will cooperate truthfully, and I believe the facts should determine what happened.
“I care about Berenice and sincerely wish her well in her recovery. I also believe that I am entitled to have these extraordinarily serious allegations evaluated on the evidence,” the statement concluded.

Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken allegedly questioned and made repeated comments about her chief
of staff Berenice Ballinas’s perceived sexual orientation, pressing her to admit to being a lesbian.
According to a confidential mediation letter sent by Ballinas’s attorney Lawrence Lennemann, the allegations regarding sexual orientation include:

<><>Making statements and insinuations that Ballinas is a lesbian,
<><>directly referring to her as one,
<><>pressuring her to admit it.
<><>Public questioning Ballinas’s sexuality in front of other people during a June visit to Disneyland.
<><>Questioning her romantic relationships
<><>and making comments directed at her guests and companions between 2023 and 2026.
Democrats can say racist things. It’s ok.
Sure I don’t like this mayor politically.
But if this was her chief of staff all those years, seems likely this was in the context of a personal relationship and not done maliciously.
I don’t like people who work with someone or have a relationship and then come out with comments they made to embarrass them.

Who paid for the team trip to Disneyland?
Official details regarding who paid for Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken and her team’s visit to Disneyland’s exclusive Club 33 have not been publicly disclosed, but the outing was linked to an unnamed third party whose Club 33 membership was subsequently suspended.
The June 2026 trip came to light following a formal mediation letter sent to the city by Aitken’s Chief of Staff, Berenice Ballinas.
The letter detailed a lunch and drinks gathering at Disneyland’s private Club 33 and California Adventure’s 1901 Lounge.
According to the allegations, Aitken engaged in workplace harassment and made inappropriate remarks during the visit.
As a direct result of the mayor’s conduct, Disney suspended the Club 33 membership of the third party who hosted or facilitated the team’s access to the private venues.
I have to suppose that Club 33 has a liquor license even though it’s in Disneyland, and also suppose that Herhonor the mayor has an expense account to augment her dining experience with ample libations, and furthermore that she thought she was being fabulously hilarious when she tried to pin down her chief of staff as one who deviates from the norm.
The poor Club 33 member who lent the mayor’s crew the access! Since the membership is now suspended, that’s one friendly gesture they’re going to regret for a long time. Or maybe that put’s them in the cat-bird seat if the mayor realizes the damage she’s caused to the Club 33 member’s social status, and intends to make amends.
No, they are not!
How about everybody grow up and not take words spoken in anger so seriously.
We all say things in anger that we do not truly mean and they should not be taken seriously.
We say things to family that we all forgive and go on with them and forgive.
People in our society, thanks to our Liberal betters have taken to being unforgiving of verbal slights.
Well, our Liberal betters do not like it when we all live together in harmony.
But everyone is better off when we ignore our Liberal betters.

Would "incompetent Californian" be a racial slur? If not, WHY not?
How about "self-important Chicano," "high-handed Angeleno," or "delusional Latinx?"
By this logic, any combination of "pejorative adjective" + "reference to ethnic background or geographic origin" should likewise be classified as a "racial slur."
By the way: "Mexican" is not a race - hence "dirty Mexican" cannot be a racial slur."
