You Owe A Debt Of Gratitude To All Heritage Americans For Making America Great
The Federalist ^ | 9/17/2026 | Brianna Lyman

During the 2012 presidential campaign, Barack Obama infamously told business owners, “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that.” Obama argued individual success was fake, instead, success depended on other people. Republicans heard the real point: Obama was trying to diminish the work, sacrifice, and legacy of successful business owners.

Dan McLaughlin understood the problem at the time. “If you convince people that success has little to do w/work & merit, you justify more burdens on successful.”

Fair point. People who build something deserve credit for building it. But that principle should apply not just when the achievement belongs to a single business owner, but to generations of Americans whose families built this country from nothing and have sustained it thus far.

Heritage Americans (of which I am proudly one, sorry McLaughlin) cleared this land, founded towns, raised churches, built the very institutions we use today, fought for independence, settled our frontier, defended this country, cultivated its land, and handed their descendants a nation worth inheriting.

Acknowledging that debt simply means giving the people who built and have preserved the country the credit that McLaughlin once insisted successful builders deserve.

Yet in a milquetoast piece that can be found in National Review, McLaughlin dismisses the notion of Heritage Americans as “massively overrated and counterproductive.”

Obama showed his abysmal ignorance when he stupidly
told business owners........ “you didn’t build that.”

The sap-happy “community organizer” has no idea of the
blood, sweat, and tears people put into their businesses.

I have two ancestors who fought in the revolutionary war: their stone houses that they built after the war are still lived in in Central Pennsylvani. I have one ancestor in the civil war and my dad fought in WWII pacific & Korea. His last post was in the Pentagon during the Viet Nam War. He retired and spent his last years maintaining his parents farm.

Nice to hear there are folks who value such things. Most don’t.

It does not appear that the still-undefined term Heritage American made its way into the 14th Amendment, any other provision of the Constitution, or any federal statute.

`I’ll be watching NFL today. Is it all Lamar Jackson and Derick Henry? Or are the 50 players in the game plus coaches, staff, the opponent.....the fans that make it possible?

The same with American Heritage. George Washington led a group of men. He gets recognized. But they all deserve recognition.

“If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that.”

How pathetic. Businesses and their employees hired government to perform certain functions and paid for them.

But this veiled socialist language has become popular.

People who see themselves as the have nots on the bottom of the socioeconomic spectrum, the losers, LOVE to hear that success is mere luck, handed to others through unfair opportunity (the language of privilege), or through some immoral/unethical behavior.

The idea that hard work, persistence and making GOOD decisions leads to success does not make the loser feel good about themselves.

They want to hear that they are failing because of racism, sexism, or whatever else, not their stupid neck tattoo and nose ring, poor academic performance, poor athletic performance, poor financial decisions, poor life choices in who they marry, their sexual behaviors, and drug usage... Money, sex and drugs are the reason people fail in life primary.

But!!! Does Obama apply the same loser philosophy in his and his families life? Of course not. These are people that just use the losers for their own success, but they know what it takes to succeed and apply hard work, persistence and good decisions in their own lives.

American. No ‘heritage’ needed.

deadbeat is the “other” category, no ‘American’..

Two ancestors are impressive!

Are you a Son (or Daughter) of the American Revolution?

If not, I am and I can help you put in a claim.

I research genealogy as a hobby and know how to pull real facts from old records, town records, militia rolls, county records, early census data, etc.

I am a daughter of 1812 and a Colonial Dame 17th century. My sister and my cousin did the genealogy studies. They have both passed onto eternal life. I miss them.

Any citizen, old or new, should love our country and its Heritage. There was once a time when people did not come here for “free stuff” which now seems to be the case.

I guess I didn’t build that cabin, the ground holds the foundation so equal billing needs to go to the dirt.

I have ancestors who fought in the revolution and others on each side of the Civil War. One of my ancestors was a guide for Danial Boone. Im of this soil and idiots like Obozo are not and they are in no position to denigrate the contributions my family and thousands of others have made.

What year of ancestor immigration qualifies a person to be a “Heritage American”?
