Trump pledges $5K ‘Trump dividend’ if Republicans hold onto Congress

President Trump pledged a $5,000 payout to U.S. adults on Wednesday, but only if Republicans hold onto their majority in Congress come November.

“Here is my promise: if the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them … because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” he said at the GOP’s midterm convention in Dallas, Texas.

The legality of this disbursal is unclear. There are about 270 million adults in the U.S.

Trump told attendees Wednesday that the administration can disburse the proposed “Trump dividends” “because we’ve done so well and because our country is making so much money.”

He added that the payments could only be used in the U.S. but did not outline any specifics.

“We don’t want you going to Canada to spend the money,” he said. “We don’t want you going to China, to Germany.”

Trump had teased the announcement earlier in his marathon speech at the Dallas arena, saying he thought it would be “the best part of the speech.”

The president has floated ideas like this before. Last year, he promised to distribute $2,000 tariff dividend checks to Americans but was vague about specifics.

It was unclear whether Congress would have to approve such a move. Trump said he didn’t “believe” he needed congressional approval for the tariff checks, but National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett later suggested Congress would have to be involved.

“ Obama promised affordable health care and still gets a pass for that whopper.”

A pass

It’s even called Obamacare.

Not to mention it would be “means tested” just like all the other good deals he has done,,,,,,,,i.e. no tax Social Security, overtime and tips,,,,all “means tested”.

Even the tariff dividend checks—which never happene—was going to be “means tested”. BTW,,,,,that’s the democrats favorite way of wealth redistribution and penalizing the successful

I tuned him out a long time ago. He just babbles a bunch of nonsense anymore, none of which he intends to fulfill. I’m still waiting for my $2000 tariff rebate.

>>I hope he quietly drops the whole thing.

He will drop it, just like the majority of his shoot-from-the-hip pronouncements that generate headlines and accomplish nothing.

At this point I am already looking forward to the next president, as long as it is a republican - which it easily could have been if Trump had just stuck to the most important issues, and *if* the spineless GOP in congress actually did anything worthwhile - which they haven’t.

Smells like vote-buying.

Hmmm.. Maybe it's OK to use a foolish bait to catch a foolish fish. (?)

Just think of the precedent it would set. It would open Pandora’s Box—the bidding wars would then begin!

The next election, the Republican Presidential nominee again offer $5,000 if he is elected. The democratic nominee then offers $10,000 if he/she is elected (in both cases means tested—only applying to those with lower incomes).

Where does it stop?

The legality of this disbursal is unclear.

No it isn't. Congress would have to appropriate it. It's that place in the Constitution where it says "No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law"

Works for me - it’s our money anyway - why shouldn’t we get some tangible benefit?

Tariffs were ruled illegal by courts and the money collected was returned.

Don’t hold your breath waiting. Scotus ruled tariffs were not legal and the money was returned to those who paid tariffs.

Where do you think the 30 year would trade if this election-year giveaway were to actually take place?>>>. You would think Trumps wants the rates high in spite of what he says. 5D chess? And there were no DOGE savings as a recission bill has never been passed. DOGE only reported some really bad payments and those checks all cleared.
