Five-year depreciation varies dramatically by model, with a spread of more than 50 percentage points between the best and worst performers in this ranking.
This graphic ranks cars with the highest and lowest five-year depreciation in 2026, based on data from iSeeCars. The automotive research firm analyzed more than 950,000 five-year-old used vehicles sold between March 2025 and February 2026, with prices adjusted to 2026 dollars.
The study compares each vehicle’s average used price with its original manufacturer’s suggested retail price, or MSRP. Lower depreciation means a vehicle retained a larger share of its original purchase price.
The Porsche 718 Cayman stands out as the strongest performer, depreciating by just 9.6% over five years.
That works out to an average decline of only $6,988 from its original MSRP of approximately $72,800. The Porsche 911 follows at 11.1%, while the Chevrolet Corvette ranks third at 18.7%.

Sports cars take four of the top seven spots, with the Porsche 718 Cayman and 911 joined by the Chevrolet Corvette and Subaru BRZ. The results show that some enthusiast models can retain value far better than the broader market despite their relatively high purchase prices.
Known for its long-standing reputation for vehicle reliability, Toyota has a particularly strong showing among models that hold their value.
The Tacoma and Tundra rank fourth and fifth, depreciating 19.9% and 21.2%, respectively. Toyota’s seven entries span pickups, SUVs, compact cars, and a minivan, suggesting that the brand’s resale strength extends well beyond a single model or vehicle category.
At the other end of the ranking, the Nissan LEAF has the highest five-year depreciation at 63.1%. The Volkswagen ID.4 follows at 62.1%, while the Tesla Model S loses 62.0%.

Six EVs rank among the 15 fastest-depreciating vehicles: the Nissan LEAF, Volkswagen ID.4, Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Tesla Model Y.
Older EVs can face resale pressure as newer models offer improvements in range, charging speeds, and technology, while changes in new-vehicle pricing can also affect used values.
A newer EV may therefore be more competitive than a five-year-old model on range, charging performance, or software.
Luxury vehicles also feature prominently. The Land Rover Range Rover loses 61.7% of its value, equal to an average decline of $69,856 from MSRP, the largest dollar loss among the models shown. The BMW 7 Series, INFINITI QX80, and Range Rover Sport also post steep declines.

I don’t know if it comes under the topic of holding value, but ... Our Honda Accord is 2012. It has under 40,000 miles on it. IIRC, the back seat never has been “sat it”. Every time DH takes it for service the guys in the shop want to buy it. It looks brand new in every way.
We’ve considered shopping for a newer car, but we’re comfortable with this one with NO TOUCH SCREEN. Push an actual tactile button to change radio stations. Turn a knob to change temperature. We may have to add external Bluetooth for cell phone use, and external backup camera.
I bought mine used, so I don’t know what problems the old owner had.
A twenty five year old specimen with less than 50k on the clock will cost you more than when it was brand new.
The Germans have gone to extensive use of plastics, even on engine parts. But even then they are plastics that degrade quickly in the heat. It is planned obsolescence and is getting worse. The new cars are designed to make maintenance outside of a dealer impossible. Plus, cars sit in dealers for months because mechanics are getting hard to find because of the way they are treated at dealerships.
Where does the Gremlin or Pacer fit in there?
Wouldn't the prudent thing to do with EVs is to lease, so you won't have to worry about battery replacement costs...

The FJ Cruiser was the best resale value of all vehicles until recently. For awhile they were selling for more used than their original sticker.
If you keep an eye out on Facebook marketplace there are Tacomas that come up for sale from the original owners.
I looked for a while to try to find a 2015 Double cab V6 long bed. The problem is that the used car dealers try to buy them up if they are in decent shape because they know they are in big demand. I found one with 55K miles on it.

I guess I don’t understand this. I have worked with budgets concerning property and depreciation was set based upon a few things that included ware and repairability, usefullness, cost to replace, and total original cost with a few other minor things in the mix.
I have owned Toyota products since the middle 1990’s and currently own a highlander. One of the things consistent with the camries and rav4’s I have owned is that they seem indestructable and are good for a very high mile capacity without hardly any major maintenance if you follow the plan. So why are they so far down on the list? My last two I got over 180K miles before I traded them in and got top dollar according to Kelley and the current market based on sales and not tradein offer?

If you get a 3–5-year-old Porsche 911, the big depreciation is kind of done.

Going from memory here, so correct me if I'm wrong. The 2005 Wrangler Unlimited was the two-door with the 10-inch body and frame stretch over the standard Wrangler. You have one of the most sought-after semi-modern Wranglers out there (since the newest versions of those are now 20 years old).
Notice that the top three aren’t cars, they’re collectors’ items ... that rather skews valuation.

I miss the days when I could replace water pump, fuel pump, tune up my car in 30 minutes, change worn out break pads etc myself. In the newer cars, I can’t even find where all those items are and there is no room under the hood to jump in there.
My wifes got a 2015 3 series.
Never missed a lick since we bought it.
But I did hear the newer ones aren’t quite as reliable.
