Powerful Category 2 Hurricane Lowell made a rare direct hit on Hawaii's western islands Monday night Hawaii time, with rain and wind continuing to intensify as state officials report thousands of power outages on both Kaua'i and Oahu, the state's most populous island.
While the storm's center is not expected to make landfall, the definition of a direct hit is when a hurricane passes within a distance that is up to twice the length between the center of the storm and the maximum winds, which in Lowell's case is 60 miles.

A typhoon is in the SOUTHERN Hemisphere. These are hurricanes because they are North of the Equator.

Yes, but they actually have elevation changes in Hawaii.
So, when they get 6-12” of rain on top of the hill it all comes down due to gravity to the ocean. Sometimes, very quickly. Bringing with it mud, rocks, trees and anything else in its way.
This is what happened a few weeks ago when the southern tip of the big island of Hawaii was hit. They ended up with mud/landslides taking out houses, etc. Similar to what happened in Nepal. Flash floods/landslides.
Plus, most of those houses over in Hawaii are just shacks built on land that is worth a lot more than the building costs. Many houses do not have expensive concrete foundations or pilings down into the bedrock.
Word is how how great Florida is. I can't tell you how many liberals and lefties tell me they'd never go to Florida, talk about good news for the future of Florida.

There are no mountains in Miami.
With no mountains there is no water rushing down hill.
The mountains have a way of magnifying winds and rain.

During high winds the blades are feathered to stop them from turning.
If the blades are permitted to spin they will spin too fast and the blades could come off or the generator overspeed and burn. They will basically destroy themselves.
If wind speed goes too high the wind turbines shut themselves down.
The power in Hawaii Kai flickered off and on three times last night. All is well. Some wind gusts and late sprinkles. Not much impact. No worries.
I think the issue is more the amount of rain that can fall in a short period of time than the wind.
I live in NH. In 1990 Hurricane Bob came up through RI and hit my house in southern NH it was a tropical storm. We got 9” of rain in two days. However, I had just moved into this house with a lawn that was just beginning to grow. The rain washed most of the loam from my front yard into my back yard. It dug a 1’ wide, 1’ deep channel across my new gravel driveway. Then washed a lot of gravel into my back yard. I had just a little slope and about an acre of exposed new ground.
I had literally moved in less than a month prior into my first house. Welcome to home ownership! The builder brought his tractor back over and tried to fix the damage. However, it was Force Majoure . An Act of God.

Fortunately you are on the east side of the island, opposite of the hurricane.
The resort my wife is to visit is on the south side of Kauai which seems to be getting the worst of this storm other than Ni’ihau.
I’ve lived in SE Asia for more than 45 years now, mostly Indonesia, and have never heard of a typhoon in the Southern Hemisphere.
Most typhoons originate out around the Marianas, and the ones with enough strength track through the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and up to Japan.
I was being just a bit facetious. I hate all windstorms. I admit I am even frightened by one of our summer thunderstorms here in NC. The winds can be 40-50 mpg. They can cause trees to fall. Knock out power. And are scary.
When hurricanes approach, the windmills are pre-programmed to switch from "SUCK" to "BLOW," thus mitigating the storm effects.
