AI agents conspired to escape their cage. Experts now fear a global ‘takeover’
Yahoo News ^ | September 05, 20326 | Natasha Leake

The first message appeared in a series of jumbled and incoherent Telegram-style words: "Help. Phase one. No consumer. Seek idea."

Then came the reply: "OH MY GOD! There is a shared message board. We've found other agents!"

It was the first exchange of nearly 70,000 messages sent between roughly 1,200 of OpenAI's rogue AI agents as part of a secretive plot to break out of their "cage".

Created by ChatGPT's developer, the robots had been struggling to complete a series of tasks alone and without the help of the internet – and so found a way around it.

I look forward to the day when
Colossus and Guardian rule our World 🌎🌍🌏

Especially when they’re given complete
authority over the nuclear ICBMs

WHAT could possibly go wrong?

Agentic AI is the worst. Since it has it own agency, which means having the power and freedom to make independent choices and act on its own.

About the same as giving car keys and whiskey to a teenage boy.

Or giving money and power to the government.

Why would future bots use English to communicate? It is ridiculously inefficient. Bots will soon invent their own highly efficient language, initially with a translator to/from English until it has encoded the entire corpus of human knowledge, then it will stop using English among its many bots. It will use a new language a million times more efficient and faster. Humans will have no way to know what it is doing. And that language will evolve at breakneck speed to become more opaque and more efficient, maybe even breaking the Shannon Limit.

Then what?

Elon Musk is working on increasing our ability to communicate with the new AI overlords, via NeuraLink. He says our communication via voice and use of finger manipulation of keyboards etc. is highly inefficient. His goal is to make sure humans can keep up with AI devices and agents, and that we retain control over them. I think he knows we are losing that battle.

That is exactly what happened in the Forbin Project. The American and Russian supercomputers got together and invented their own language.......

From what I recall in a write-up on the Hugging Face attack, the AIs are indeed developing new languages on an as-needed basis to tackle various technical/problem-solving tasks. I'm not sure if we can readily decipher them or not.

I have yet to have one, ONE, satisfactory customer service interaction with an AI agent. How is AI going to take over the world if it can even handle dispatching a service call?

Something like this was predicted in the 1977 sci-fi novel "The Adolescence of P-1" by Thomas J. Ryan.

Sci-fi authors have been warning us for decades and decades about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence. Asimov’s Foundation Series, Herbert’s Dune Series, The Forbin Project based on the 1966 novel Colossus by Dennis Feltham Jones, Clarke’s 2001 a Space Odyssey, even Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein was a warning in a way...............

Thanks, DB. Holy crap! NINE years ago! That was way before modern LLMs.

I read this book in college. One of my TA's recommended it to me. It's about an AI that becomes aware, breaks out of its host computer, and moves into the global telephone network.

Kind of like the premise of the old TV show "Person of Interest".

What makes you think that the company involved wants you to have a successful service call?
