Mom feels 'helpless' after UnitedHealthcare denies coverage for her son's rehab after motorcycle accident

A mother has said she feels 'helpless' and called UnitedHealthcare money-hungry after the insurance company allegedly denied covering her son's rehab for a brain injury.

Peyton Alvarez, a 25-year-old airline mechanic at PSA Airlines, crashed into a tree while riding his motorcycle in Greenville, South Carolina, on April 28.

Although he was wearing a helmet and other protective gear, the collision caused a serious brain injury that left him unconscious for a month and a half. Doctors told his mother, Trina Alvarez, that Peyton may never wake up.

But the young man eventually opened his right eye in early June, and he can move his left arm and wiggle his toes when prompted, Trina told the Daily Mail.

Peyton's mom submitted a claim with her son's insurance plan, managed by UnitedHealthcare through his employer, and she made the arrangements to have him transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a top brain injury rehabilitation facility.

But on July 7, Trina was crushed when she received a denial letter from UnitedHealthcare, which stated that Peyton's treatment at the facility was 'medically unnecessary.'

'It is so frustrating. It makes me so angry that they can control what happens with my son because the longer he stays at the hospital he's at, the less chance he has to wake up,' Trina told the Daily Mail.

'When you push a parent to the point of feeling like they are helpless, and may contribute to whether their son may ever be able to talk or move his arms and legs or sit up on his own, that should not be allowed,' she added.

I hope he recovers. I do not say this in cliche. I have personally witnessed someone that was written off as brain dead, where the family was being pushed for organ donation, recover! He over dosed on drugs, his friends were scared and abandoned him not notifying the authorities.

******************************************

So, a dude over doses on drugs and the insurance must pay out millions for his rehab?

What’s wrong with this business model? Should it be up to the insurance company to pay for the dudes bad judgement?

I feel sorry for the mother — she’s in a horrible situation. Insurance policies have terms and maximum limits designed to protect them from being driven out of business by a massive claims, and thus either unable to pay “normal” claims or forced to charge premiums few could afford. I suspect the insurer deems that meaningful “rehab” is an unrealistic expectation. Perhaps she should have an attorney that specializes in this sort of thing read the policy. If he/she sees a plausible argument that the insurer owes her son the desired treatment, he/she will know how to push the buttons.

What does the doctor want done?

What is the doctor’s experience with such treatment in like cases? Describe three cases picked from memory.

Would people pay to have it done if they made $200,000/year and lacked insurance?

How about we pay twice the standard rate if the treatment works and zilch if it doesn’t, with the provider taking on the risk?

Does it need a professionally trained person to do the work?

Every state is different. Talk with someone in your state for correct info.

You make a good point.

Anyone who indulges in a dangerous activity (riding motorcycles, doing drugs, etc.) should be required to declare it when applying for insurance. Then the premiums are adjusted upward accordingly.

Don’t declare? Then you’re not covered if that activity causes you harm.

Why would any company even want to insure reckless self endangerment?
Motor cyclists… rock climbers….parachutists….cliff jumpers… all the risk takers.
Then the first responders get to clean up the mess? Why?

Your healthcare insurance, or HMO-PPO, does not cover your motor vehicle related injuries. You're required to have vehicle insurance for such injuries. You might have coordination of benefits, but that is unlikely.

Why do media outlets troll victimhood?

I know health insurers can be cold and callous. I know that they make bad decisions. But not all denials are evil or based on greed. The guy was in a coma for over a month and has a serious brain injury. The cost of rehab will be in the millions. UnitedHealthcare does not have a money printing machine in its basement. If they didn’t make tough decisions, your premiums would go up by 20% per year instead of 10%. Maybe this denial is a wrong decision. I don’t know the details and facts. But the knee-jerk sob story of “poor mom can’t get her disabled son medical care due to evil insurance company” is shallow clickbait.

Awful and sad, but they are called donor-cycles for a reason. Better parenting would lead to fewer sad stories I have to read.

Im happy you have access to all the factors that go into a traffic accident. Your insights into road quality, the behavior of other drivers and possible sudden changes in the weather give you admirable insights into this situation, thanks for being inexpressibly helpful in granting us your wisdom.

There was plenty of denial of service long before Obamacare came along.

Americans are stuck with the illogical and immature notion that healthcare is some kind of unlimited, infinite good available to everyone, an entitlement to everyone merely because of their existence as individuals.

Like anything in this world, health care must be rationed. Supply is not infinite.

We also labor under a simplistic, and false, paradigm which has never existed in reality of two extremes of "market freedom and efficiency" on one side, and "socialist central planning and equity" on the other. We've been pushing towards the bloated bureaucratic socialist side for many decades now.

Even In supposed extreme laissez faire periods, churches, nuns and communities ran collective hospitals and networks to take care of the poor and their local neighbors. Conversely, even in the most marxist regimes, health-care is still rationed by financial ability (paying bribes), one's political class, or connections to power.

Like most government functions in America, health care needs radical decentralization. Let localities decide what is needed, and how they themselves will fund it. They will come up with their own ideal local blend of freedom/capitalism/collectivism/socialism.

Tell me, are you fat?

Ever smoke?

Drink booze?

Do you eat a good diet?

Do you exercise regularly?

Ride an ATV?

Ski?

Do you ever drive without a seatbelt?

Were you a virgin when you got married and have you only had sex with one person ever? I think we shouldn’t pay for those philandering whores that get STDs.

What about homo’s, should we pay for their AIDS and HIV like we are?

People like you are very quick to judge others based on what you approve or disapprove of, but you do not like it when others do the same to you or those close to you. Then of course it’s “all different.”

"By the way #2, When you hit 65, do your research before picking an Advantage” medical plan. They’re run not by the government, but by insurance companies."

*******************************************************

There's no reason ever to choose Medicare Advantage. You give up control of your care and it is a Hotel California. You can't change back later to the best supplement plans like F and G without passing strict underwriting.

OK number 1 the hospital would submit claims for his care and number 2 the hospital would make rehab arrangements for care. Mom screwed up when she tried to take charge

which stated that Peyton’s treatment at the facility was ‘medically unnecessary.’

Which leads me to assume that not all treatment at any facility would be denied. If Peyton’s doctors felt that only that facility could provide treatment (and said treatment was necessary for recovery) they could send a letter stating such to the insurance company. These types of denial sometimes happen if the treatment is deemed experimental. Again a letter from the doctors outlining why it is necessary usually will lead to it being reconsidered.

But this is also a reminder the insurance company’s first concern is not patient care. It is that the patient gets care that does not threaten the fiscal responsibility they owe to share holders.
