Freedom Is Much More Important Than Democracy
American Thinker ^ | 4 Sep, 2026 | J.B. Shurk

Democracy invites despotism. When understood as majority rule, democracy means that fifty-one of every hundred citizens can have their way with the other forty-nine.

“But I want to keep my possessions, weapons, and children.” Too bad, the majority have decided to redistribute your property to those lazy bums over there, disarm you before you can do anything about it, and indoctrinate your children in public schools, so that they learn to resent you and love the State.

Democracy is dangerous without guardrails. Unless a society has a strong sense of moral virtue that fosters personal discipline, duty, and honor, base selfishness becomes the driving motivation behind all political action. Unless certain constitutional protections exist to safeguard each individual’s inviolable rights, democratic majorities devour those rights whenever expedient.

This should surprise no-one. Political philosophers such as Hobbes and Locke described humans’ pre-government “state of nature” as a chaotic, violent clash of self-interest. Adam Smith’s “invisible hand” regards self-interest as the engine of free markets. Consequently, it is easy to understand why forms of democracy that are unshackled from both moral and constitutional restraints prompt a society to descend back into a state of nature in which humanity’s worst impulses are again indulged.

When Western leaders speak adoringly of “our democracy,” citizens should prepare to guard their freedoms. My goodness, there is nothing inherently virtuous about democracy. North Korea’s Kim Jong Un runs the most repressive regime on the planet, but his country is known officially as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea! China’s Xi Jinping is the general secretary of the oppressive Chinese Communist Party, but his nation remains officially the People’s Republic of China! Dictatorships around the globe claim to govern in the name of the people.

When democRAT politicians say “Our Democracy” everyone should know the politician is just saying that their degenerate supporters plus the illegal immigrants will out vote you.

Drivel and ignorance

The world history always teaches that there is no freedom absent a government created by the people. Absent democracy, there is no freedom.

Yes, I know America is a Republic. The Republic is governed by elected leaders

A big part of Freedom is being able to move around without being tracked against our will, since we could leave our cell phones at home, and other camera systems were not linked to a central database that can be accessed at will by government entities.

We had that until Flock entered the scene.

The United States is a Constitutional, Representative REPUBLIC.

The leftists have repeated the “ democracy “ mantra so repeatedly, that even conservatives, who should know better, are hooked on the “ democracy “ lie.

Is the society high trust? It does not matter what form of Government you have if its own people are corrupt. Religion , and only certain ones at that, have been proven to achieve that.

Our society certainly is not high-trust anymore.

Democracy is a dirty word. I’m tired of conservatives using it. It confers legitimacy on the word Democrat.

No. In a Republic the people are governed by laws. When we are led by votes or leaders we’ve voted for we are in a Democracy. When we are in a Republic with elected officials who are acting outside of or superior to the law we are in neither.

But you’ve willed it. You signed the agreements for your phone.

The Flock cameras are a bit different. We’re arguing about that as a society as we speak.

Not right now. A well-armed society is a polite society. A polite society is a high-trust society. We’re stopped the slide for now. We need to keep working hard to reverse it.

“Democracy” is a term much misunderstood. Same word, two completely incompatible definitions.

Democracy, as in democratic representation, is the selection of representatives by a majority of the eligible electors within a specified unit of human activity (not necessarily a governing body). Generally considered to be civilized behavior.

But “democracy”, mob rule, is the overwhelming of ANY dissent if there is 50% plus one agreement on ANY issue, and dissent is brutally crushed without thought to consequences. The complete antithesis to civilization.

“But you’ve willed it. You signed the agreements for your phone.”

True, but I can STILL leave my phone at home if I’m going to a meeting (or Trump rally) that could EASILY be considered be turned illegal AFTER the fact. I guess I could try leaving my license plates at home for those types of meetings...but there’s now a surveillance system (at least where I live) that will capture and report that fact, real-time, to the cops.

The difference between a democracy and a republic is not just semantic. Democracy is just majoritarian rule. It is the rule of what three wolves and a lamb decide to have for dinner. Aristotle divided governments into three categories, those ruled by a single person, those ruled by an elite, and those ruled by the general population. For the first two he divided them into pure forms and debased form: monarchy vs despotism; aristocracy vs oligarchy. But he saw no pure form of democracy, it was always a debased form that led to tyranny. Rather, what he advocated was polity or a republic where the three sources of power—monarchy, aristocracy, and popular—would be balanced against each other. This was what our founding fathers were trying to establish. Pure democracy frightened them.
