US Mint rolls out new $1 coins featuring President Trump’s face (the mugshot?)

President Trump’s face is now on a new $1 coin being sold by the US Mint, and collectors will have to shell out more than a buck to get their hands on one.

The Mint is selling the commemorative coins featuring the sitting president as part of its celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, according to its website.

“These coins are also in circulation, so check your pocket change. Collect them today!” the Mint said on X.

The Philadelphia-minted currency is available in 25-coin rolls and 100-coin bags, and priced between $61 and $154.50, the Mint said.

One side features a portrait of Trump alongside the inscriptions “liberty” and “in God we trust” in all caps, along with “1776 ~ 2026.”

The portrait was designed by US Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna and was inspired by an official White House photograph taken by Daniel Torok, according to the Mint.

worthless, unlike the Obama coins. Because as every collector knows, a coin minted with a mistake or error, is always more valuable....

"Get your Trump Coins in Circulation ASAP!"

Nah. They are immediately collectible. They'll be worth much more than the dollar and half I paid for mine.

Sold out. I doubt anyone will find these in pocket change like the US Mint suggests. Circulation starts today. I still have stacks of Sacajawea dollar coins from back when.

Agreed. I'm not expecting much more detail for etchings in metal. I think it looks good.

And the fact that it's drawn like the mugshot is the iconic reminder of the times. Looking at the coin 20 years from now will remind us of Trump's justifiable indignation.

As stated in the coin listing at the mint website, SOME of these bags and rolls will contain the special “JULY 4TH” embossing (known as PRIVY coins). This begs the question, DO YOU KEEP YOUR ROLLS AND BAGS UNOPENED or DO YOU CHECK THEM to see if any of the PRIVY coins are included inside?

LOL! That would be funny! Will send a couple of these to friends.

Private businesses do not have to accept coins or cash for payment.

I have a Ruger Commemorative 10/22 for his 2020 reelection that was stolen. Idaho #1. It makes me smile.

Demand has a big part of the price.

The privy coins will be worth so much more, so I would open them.

I usually pick up the silver coins in the same way. It just seems like the production run of this is so large that it will be decades before the premium is covered.

From a strict “business” perspective, I couldn’t see the benefit of getting these right out of the gate.

That's a good question.

Normally, for bank rolls, I will open them and sort for collectibles. Pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. There might be little treasures inside those rolls.

For US Mint buys? I don't normally open the bags. That's why I bought a couple rolls of the Trump Dollar. Those I will bust open and check. And give out to family and friends.

LONG TERM, the unopened bags and rolls will fetch a PREMIUM because most bags and rolls will have been opened, leaving the unopened items far more rare and desirable.

I’ll keep the Washington bills I have on me. Don’t need any of these.

" I couldn’t see the benefit of getting these right out of the gate."

Because it is a very limited run. High demand vs Low Supply = profit.

Let me know when you find a Trump Dollar coin in your pocket change.

[snicker] let me know when you find any dollar or half-dollar coin in your change. There's a story behind why a quarter was described as 'two bits'.

Paper currency is so much more convenient.

Slightly off topic- when the 5oz. Apollo 11 Proof coins went on sale, I tried to get through the moment they went on sale. I didn’t make it. I did manage to score 2 from the second run. What’s the secret to getting through the first time?

I just rechecked the site and there is no montage limit. The special Privy Mark has 250,000 minted.

Those are not “rare” coins.

As a comparison, the Flowing Hair silver coin had a limit of 1,794 privy mark minted. THAT is rare.

I wanted to make sure I hadn’t misread the release I saw earlier.

I am not Pooh-poohing anyone who wanted to buy these. I just did not see it as an “investment” as others have been in the past.

To each their own.

For the ones I’ve gotten into, they open the door a few minutes before. Usually if you can get in 15 minutes early you have a good chance.

But I’ve tried that and sat in the waiting room…and the second 12 noon hits, the wait goes from 2 minutes to 35….and then they are sold out.

It’s pretty hit or miss. I’ve lucked out on some of them. But you really need to be lucky.
