Southern California drivers dreaming of a cheap new car may soon have another pint-sized option to consider, if Mexico’s bargain electric vehicles ever make their way across the border.
Mexico has unveiled Olinia, a new homegrown electric vehicle brand built around tiny, affordable EVs designed for short trips, small businesses and urban deliveries, according to Marketplace.
The Olinia lineup is part of Mexico’s broader effort to develop its own electric vehicle industry rather than simply serve as a manufacturing base for global automakers.
President Claudia Sheinbaum has promoted the project as evidence that Mexico can develop its own technology and products.
“Olinia is proof that Mexico can go beyond merely being a recipient of investment,” she said. “It can generate knowledge, develop technology, and design solutions.”
And with a projected price tag of less than $9,000 for the first model, the vehicles could turn heads in famously car-dependent California, where even used vehicles can cost a small fortune.
The catch? These aren’t exactly built for cruising down the 405 at 70 mph.
The Olinia Uno is a compact city car with a projected range of about 90 miles per charge and a top speed of roughly 30 mph. It can be charged using a standard household outlet and is designed primarily for local driving.

YouTube car mechanic Scotty Kilmer says to avoid any vehicle made in Mexico. The quality control just isn’t there.
But at $9,000 - eh, it just might be worth the risk. Just don’t park it in an attached garage.

Except for those in the subdivisions, streets around here have speed limits of 40 to 50 mph. Totally impractical even for runs to the grocery store or schools. It might work for rush hour commuting on the expressway, but getting to the expressway itself would be highly dangerous.

Australia brought in a bunch of Chinese made pickups a decade ago… all of them are turning into rust buckets you can’t sell to any one. In fact a used Toyota Hilux pickup is often going for more money down there than a brand new Chinese pickup- lots of parts for the Hilux and lots of people to repair them - unlike the Chinese trucks.
It might be useful for people with second homes in places like Martha’s Vineyard.

too bad—Need a top speed to at least 50mph to get around in these rural areas of the Gold Country hilly roads. Heck—I would spend $12K to get that—50mph, charge at home with 110v. Just don’t hit any deer.
