A poll released earlier this month claiming Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass had a wide lead over Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman in the city’s mayoral race was bogus, according to the company that released it.
Median Strategies on Monday said in its announcement about the mayoral race poll that it has stopped its polling project. Its poll showed Bass ahead by nearly 12 points, citing the response of 560 Angelenos and with a 4.1 percent margin of error.
“Median Strategies has concluded its polling project and will not publish additional polls,” the company’s website states. “All previously published polling releases have been withdrawn and should not be cited or treated as genuine polling data. Median Strategies was created as a short-term social experiment examining how purported polling information could enter and spread through the political information ecosystem without independent verification.”
The fake poll also claimed that 16 percent of respondents said they voted for former mayoral candidate and former reality TV star Spencer Pratt. It also claimed 85 percent of Pratt voters said they planned to vote for Bass, with 7 percent saying they would back Raman in the November election.
The company told the Los Angeles Times after multiple requests for comment that the “poll” was nothing of the kind, and it added it is “not seeking publicity or attribution for the individuals involved and are declining interviews.”
Bass praised the poll in a since-deleted post on the social platform X, writing, “Doing the work, showing up, and gaining momentum. Let’s do this, LA!”
After news broke that the poll was false, a Bass campaign spokesperson told the Times, “Any bad faith attempts to influence elections should be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Raman’s campaign denounced Bass’s campaign for promoting “a fake poll without properly vetting the source.”
“It is the latest example of an administration that too often struggles to get the basics right — from posting about a pothole repair before the pothole was fixed to repeatedly giving Boyle Heights residents a Lineage cleanup deadline that the company now disputes,” a Raman spokesperson told KTLA, referring to a devastating fire at a Boyle Heights warehouse in June that, after the fire was knocked down, continues to impact nearby residents.
“Angelenos deserve a mayor who gets the facts right, communicates clearly, and does the work before announcing the result,” the spokesperson added.
