Jeffries gives mealy-mouthed answer on Medicare for All and DSA — triggering progressive outrage
NY Post ^ | 8/16/26 | Ryan King

WASHINGTON — Dem House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was dodgy Sunday about whether he backs the lefty Medicare for All plan — and if Democratic Socialists of America even belong in the party.

Backlash was immediate and fierce.

“This man is so out of touch with his party. How is he their leader??” grumbled Mehdi Hasan, founder of the progressive outlet Zeteo, of the New York rep, on social media.

Jeffries was confronted on the multitrillion-dollar Medicare for All proposal while appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“I haven’t cosponsored the Medicare for All legislation that has been introduced over the last several years,” responded the pol — who had previously done so from 2013 to 2021.

“I do think we need to figure out how to fix our broken health care system and then build something better once we repair the damage that has been done,” he said.

Medicare for All would cost between $2.5 trillion and $3.5 trillion a year on average over a decade, according to a 2020 analysis from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. For context, the US currently has a roughly $2 trillion deficit for fiscal year 2026.

Most plans call for no copayments and no deductibles. Other iterations have tacked on free dental, vision, and long-term care — which would be far more comprehensive than standard Medicare and likely cost a lot more than the typical estimates.

Their internal polling numbers aren’t reassuring.

Our Medicare plan is expensive, so I have no idea why everyone wants in on this. Costs twice as much as when my husband was working.

I think this is just a slogan, that many think it will be affordable.

Dems now favor socialism over capitalism by this overwhelming amount: new poll

Nearly 60% of party members support socialism compared to 18% who view it negatively, while just 32% have a favorable view of capitalism compared to 50% who see it as negative, according to the CBS News/YouGov survey.

There shouldn’t even be Medicare in the first place.

Kind of like the results of the Affordable Care Act.

“Dems now favor socialism over capitalism by this overwhelming amount: new poll”

Easy enough to understand why, the burying of our national debt of $42,000,000,000,000 by the MSM and the Uniparty has been overall quite effective.

When 80% of a paycheck is confiscated to pay for this socialism/communism maybe then they will wake up.

Exactly.

Anything the government is in control of costs more money than if the private sector did it.

Exactly!
When I retired, and went on Medicare, I was surprised how much my overall medical spending went up!
All that premiums, copayment and deductibles!!!

Their internal polling numbers aren’t reassuring.

All the more scary in that they are still going to take back both houses of Congress. 2018 redux.

If commies love single payer SO DAMN MUCH they can have it first. I remember when Obanacare passed, there was a special exemption in the bill saying that members of the house and senate do NOT have to get Obamacare, gee if its so great sign up and your families too

Jeffries has to finesse this issue because the donors that fund both parties don’t want Medicare for all. They want the status quo in public & private health.

However, Jefferies has to herd his new socialist members that are unhappy with democrat establishment into a viable political coalition.

“Good Luck, Hakeem.”

I’ve been using the VA for my medical treatments for like 6 or 7 years now. I really like it especially since they’ve got the bugs with the Community Care Network figured out.
